Dunluce School is a co-educational, non-selective controlled secondary school situated on the Dunluce Road in Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It educates pupils aged 11 to 16 and serves the coastal communities of Bushmills, Portballintrae, Portrush, Portstewart, and surrounding rural areas.

On 1 September 2026, Dunluce School formally amalgamated with Coleraine College and North Coast Integrated College to form a single new school, Causeway Academy. As part of the phased transition, the former Dunluce School site was repurposed as the Bushmills Campus of Causeway Academy, retaining Years 11, 12, and 14 so pupils could finish their qualifications without disruption.[1]

History

[edit]

The school was established in the mid-20th century, initially operating as Bushmills Grammar School before transitioning into a comprehensive co-educational secondary school named Dunluce School during the 1970s.[2] Throughout its operation, the school provided both academic and practical vocational pathways for secondary pupils across North Antrim and East Londonderry as a controlled non-denominational school under the Education Authority.

Curriculum

[edit]

Dunluce School provided education across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, following the Northern Ireland Curriculum. Key Stage 4 students took subjects leading to GCSE qualifications, BTECs, and occupational studies.

Amalgamation into Causeway Academy

[edit]

Under the Department of Education's regional post-primary area planning strategy, approval was granted to merge Dunluce School, Coleraine College, and North Coast Integrated College into a unified school named Causeway Academy.[1]

For the opening on 1 September 2026, a multi-campus transition plan was implemented across three sites:

  • Bushmills Campus (former Dunluce School site): Retained Key Stage 4 (Years 11–12) and Year 14 legacy pupils to allow them to complete their studies locally.[1]
  • Carthall Campus (former Coleraine College site): Hosts all incoming Key Stage 3 students (Years 8–10).[1]
  • Cloyfin Campus (former North Coast Integrated College site): Hosts the newly launched Sixth Form (Year 13).[1]

The multi-site structure acts as an interim measure ahead of a planned multi-million pound single-site capital construction project in Coleraine.[1]
