The Duke Margiris Infantry Battalion is an infantry battalion of the Lithuanian Land Forces. Established in 2018, the battalion is stationed in Šiauliai and is part of the Infantry Brigade "Žemaitija".[1][2]

History

[edit]
Established
[edit]

On 10 June 2018, considering the geopolitical situation, Lithuania's international obligations to NATO and the further development of the Infantry Brigade "Žemaitija," the Duke Margiris Infantry Battalion was established.[3][4]

The battalion was presented with its battle colours during a formal ceremony at Prisikėlimo Square in Šiauliai on 11 June 2020.[5]

At first the battalion was temporarily stationed in Klaipėda until it was relocated to Radviliškis. Since July 2024 the unit has been located at a new military base in Šiauliai.[1][3]

Historical traditions
[edit]

The battalion's name stems from Margiris, the legendary Lithuanian Duke, who is associated with the defence of Pilėnai castle against the Teutonic Order in 1336.[6]

In addition, the battalion continues the tradition of naming modern Lithuanian military units after Lithuanian military regiments from the interwar period. It is named after the 6th Infantry Regiment of Duke Margis of Pilėnai[7][8] The regiment originated on 15 June 1919 when the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Regiment was detached and reorganised as the Marijampolė Separate Battalion. On 20 November 1919 it became the 6th Infantry Regiment. The following year, on the regiment's anniversary, the name of Duke Margis of Pilėnai was conferred.

The regiment participated in the Lithuanian Wars of Independence, fighting against Bolshevik forces and later operating against the Bermontians and Polish forces. The regiment remained in active service until 1926. In 1934 it was briefly re-established and was dissolved after the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940.[8][9]

Organisation and role

[edit]

The battalion is an infantry unit of the Lithuanian Land Forces and part of the Infantry Brigade "Žemaitija".[2][10] Its main tasks include manoeuvre operations, tactical reconnaissance, fire support, force protection, combat service support, command and control, training of conscripts and active reserve personnel. The battalion takes part in national and multinational military exercises. [2][11]

Since 1 January 2023 the battalion is affiliated with the Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade (LITPOLUKRBRIG) and participates in joint training exercises with the formation.[12]

Insignia

[edit]

The service insignia of the Duke Margiris Infantry Battalion was approved by the Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis on 17 April 2020 by Order No. V-302. It consists of an upright sword surrounded by a yellow flame inside a green shield with yellow and black edging. The sword symbolises soldiers' determination to resist while the flame represents protection from darkness and evil. Green is the colour of the Lithuanian Land Forces. The service insignia was designed by Lithuanian Armed Forces heraldry specialist Nerijus Treinys[13]

On 27 May 2020, the Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis approved the official design of the battalion's battle colours by Order No. V-424. The battle colours were formally presented to the batallion in Šiauliai on 11 June 2020. [14]
