Dotto Rangimoto
[edit]Dotto Rangimoto is a Tanzanian author and poet who writes primarily in Swahili. He has published works of poetry and fiction and has received regional and international recognition, including the Mabati-Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African Literature in both poetry and fiction, and the Tuzo ya Nyerere for children’s literature.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Literary Career Rangimoto began his career as a poet, initially sharing his work on social media platforms such as Facebook. His debut poetry collection, Mwanangu Rudi Nyumbani (2018), was published by Mkuki na Nyota Publishers. The collection addresses themes of migration, youth, and family, employing elements of traditional Swahili verse. In 2017, the collection was awarded the Mabati-Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African Literature in the poetry category.[7][8][9][10]Some of his individual poems have been published in regional newspapers, including "Kazi Nitakazo Chapa," which appeared in Kenya’s Taifa Leo in March 2019.[11]
Rangimoto later turned to fiction, publishing his first novel, Wivu wa Bustani ya Edeni, in 2022. This was followed by Nakupenda Jini Mainuna (2023) and Ujanajike (2025). Ujanajike received the Mabati-Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African Literature in the fiction category, making Rangimoto one of the few writers to win in both major categories of the prize.[12][13][14]Ujanajike won the Mabati Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African Literature in 2022, making Rangimoto the only author to have received this award in both poetry and fiction categories.[15][16][17]In 2020, he earned second place in the Kalahari Short Story Competition, organized by the CENE Littéraire Association, alongside Tanzanian writer Mpolenkile Noel, who placed third.[18][19]
In addition to the Mabati-Cornell Prize, Rangimoto received second place in the Kalahari Short Story Competition in 2020, organized by the CENE Littéraire Association. On 13 April 2024, he was awarded the Tuzo ya Nyerere by the Tanzanian Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for his children’s story Tamaa ya Mchwa.[20]
