Dominique Delande (1958 – 2023) was a French theoretical physicist and Senior Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), affiliated with the Laboratoire Kastler-Brossel (LKB) at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. He was an internationally recognized pioneer in the fields of quantum chaos, Anderson localization, and wave transport in disordered media.

Biography

[edit]

Education and academic career

[edit]

Delande studied at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris from 1977 to 1981. In 1981, he joined the CNRS as a researcher at the Laboratoire de Spectroscopie Hertzienne (which later became the Laboratoire Kastler-Brossel). He earned his Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) in 1988. Over the course of his career, he held the position of Senior Research Director (Directeur de Recherche classe exceptionelle) at CNRS and Sorbonne University.

Scientific research

[edit]

His research contributions focused primarily on:

  • Quantum Chaos: Studying the dynamics of atomic systems (particularly Rydberg atoms) in strong electromagnetic fields.
  • Anderson Localization and Quantum Gases: Numerical modeling of the metal–insulator transition in ultracold atomic gases.
  • Quantum Boomerang Effect: Theoretical prediction and characterization of wave packet dynamics in disordered media.

His scientific contributions are summarized in LKB page.[1] and are reflected in more than 250 scientific publications cited more than 12000 times[2]. In 2025, a special conference honoring his achievements was held in Paris[3]

Throughout his career, he engaged in extensive international collaborations, most notably maintaining a long-term theoretical partnership with physicists at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.
