Diego Ratto (born 1988) is an Italian composer, sound artist and guitarist based in Los Angeles. He composes Electronic music and Electroacoustic music, specializing in Acousmatic music, and is actively engaged as a film music composer.
Career and education
[edit]Diego Ratto was born in Alessandria, Italy. He studied composition at the Music Conservatory Antonio Vivaldi of Alessandria under Matteo Franceschini and Riccardo Piacentini, and jazz guitar. He later pursued a Master’s degree in Electroacoustic Composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm before earning a PhD in Composition from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he studied under João Pedro Oliveira and Curtis Roads. Additionally, he studied film scoring at UCLA under Peter Golub. Ratto has participated in residency programs at institutions such as Zurich University of the Arts (Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology).[1][2][3]
Work and research
[edit]Ratto is recognized in the field of acousmatic music, where he has developed the concept of electroacoustic orchestration. His works have been featured in various international festivals and received multiple awards.[4][5] In 2025, he founded the Composer Mentorship Program at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF), where he serves as artistic director.[6]

- Golden Lala (2020) for the piece Cohærere[9]
- 1st Prize at the Sound of Silences (2020, Rome) – Edison Studio, Romaeuropa Festival, and Cineteca di Bologna for the film score of Sotterranea[10][11][12]
- Prix Russolo (2022) for the piece KOM.[13][14][8]
