Detroit Engineered Products (DEP) is a software, engineering solutions, product design and development company headquartered in Troy, Michigan, United States. The company provides computer-aided engineering (CAE) software, engineering simulation services, product design and development services, and workforce management solutions for the automotive, aerospace and defense, marine, railway, healthcare, consumer electronics, and energy industries.

DEP develops and maintains two proprietary software platforms: DEP MeshWorks, a CAE platform introduced in 2001 that provides capabilities for meshing, modelling, morphing, parameterization, optimization, process automation, and post-processing; and DEP AIWorks, an engineering artificial intelligence platform launched in 2026.

The company employs more than 850 professionals and maintains offices in the United States, India, China, and Japan, with additional international operations supported through distribution and technology partnerships.

History

[edit]

Founding (1998)

[edit]

Detroit Engineered Products (DEP) was established in 1998 in Troy, Michigan, by Radha Krishnan, an engineer who had previously worked at General Motors. Krishnan founded the company after leaving General Motors and initially operated it as an engineering services company focused on product development. Independent profiles of DEP describe its early activities as involving engineering services and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software for the automotive industry.[1][2]

Early expansion (2000–2010)

[edit]

DEP formed an equity partnership with Autoline in their initial founding period.

During its early development, The company established operations in India and developed its engineering delivery capabilities there. By 2024, independent industry coverage described DEP as operating across multiple countries and maintaining engineering and research-and-development activities in India and the United States.[3]

DEP developed MeshWorks as its proprietary computer-aided engineering platform. Independent engineering coverage has described MeshWorks as an integrated CAE platform supporting functions including meshing, parametrization, morphing and optimization.[4][5]

In 2009, DEP launched its Workforce Management division and established a technology solutions channel for product design and development.

In 2010, DEP expanded its operations in China with an engineering centre supporting local customers and engineering activities.

Global capability and footprint growth (2013–2019)

[edit]

During the 2010s, DEP expanded its engineering capabilities and international operations. The company established additional facilities in the United States and India and expanded its presence in Japan and other markets. In 2017, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced support for an expansion by Detroit Engineered Products at its Troy headquarters. The project involved approximately $1.8 million in private investment and was expected to create 91 jobs. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation described DEP as a Troy-based company providing MeshWorks software for design optimization, morphing and CAE meshing, as well as engineering services and engine-efficiency technology.[6]

DEP subsequently expanded its engineering presence in India. In 2023, The Times of India reported that the company operated engineering teams in Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Tirunelveli and was expanding its research-and-development facilities in Chennai.[7]

Recent developments (2023–present)

[edit]

In 2022, DEP was reported to have received a United States patent for an automated process for parametric modelling associated with its MeshWorks software. The patented process uses rules and templates to identify geometric features and automatically generate parameters for computer-aided-engineering models.[8]

In 2023, The Times of India reported that DEP was expanding its Chennai research-and-development facilities to support electric-vehicle applications and electro-mechanical product development. The company also planned additional hiring across software, engineering services and product-development activities.[9]

In February 2026, DEP and AVL announced a strategic partnership under which AVL would become an authorised distributor of MeshWorks to mobility companies in the United States and Europe. The partnership combines MeshWorks with AVL EXCITE for applications involving propulsion design and simulation.[10]

In April 2026, DEP held a series of MeshWorks and AIWorks events in India. DailyCADCAM reported that the Pune edition of the series, held on 7 April 2026, brought together approximately 250 design, simulation and manufacturing professionals and included representatives from companies including Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Whirlpool Corporation and Bharat Forge.[11]

DEP also launched AIWorks, an engineering artificial-intelligence platform, in 2026. Independent coverage of the 2026 MeshWorks and AIWorks events described the platform in connection with the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to engineering workflows.[12]

DEP AIWorks

[edit]

DEP AIWorks is an artificial intelligence platform for engineering and simulation developed by Detroit Engineered Products. The platform was launched in 2026 and combines machine learning with physics-based simulation for applications in product development, engineering analysis and design optimization.[26][27]

AIWorks integrates neural-network-based models and physics-based models with established computer-aided engineering (CAE) solvers. The platform is designed to support engineering workflows ranging from design exploration and simulation to validation and manufacturing.[28][29]

The platform combines predictive and generative artificial intelligence capabilities with simulation-driven engineering workflows. Its applications include prediction of engineering responses, design exploration, parameterization and optimization.[30]

Architecture

[edit]

AIWorks is structured around several functional components:

Simulate-AI

[edit]

Simulate-AI is the predictive engineering component of AIWorks. It uses simulation data and trained artificial-intelligence models to predict engineering responses and support design exploration without requiring every design variant to undergo a full physics-based solver run. The workflow includes simulation-data generation, model training, prediction, parameterization and optimization.[31]

DEP describes Simulate-AI as using physics-informed machine-learning techniques, including Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), to incorporate engineering relationships into model training. DEP's technical material identifies applications involving structural, aerodynamic and other engineering simulation responses.

Features-AI

[edit]

Features-AI provides automated recognition of geometric and modelling features in engineering models. DEP describes the system as being capable of identifying features such as ribs, bosses, fillets, spot welds, holes and flanges in finite element models.

The component is intended to automate portions of CAE model preparation and feature-recognition workflows.

GEOM-AI

[edit]

GEOM-AI combines geometry-related artificial intelligence with engineering-performance prediction. DEP describes workflows in which geometry modifications can be evaluated using trained AI models, allowing engineering responses to be predicted without repeating the complete conventional simulation process for every design variation.

The component also includes workflows for automated sub-model generation, mesh-level generative geometry and digital-twin applications based on manufactured scan data.

Agentic-AI

[edit]

Agentic-AI is an AIWorks component intended to automate multi-step engineering workflows through software agents. DEP describes the agents as capable of coordinating tasks between physics-based solvers and AI-based surrogate models.

Applications described by DEP include automated optimization workflows, multi-disciplinary engineering processes and automated generation of engineering reports.

Physics-informed modelling

[edit]

AIWorks uses physics-informed machine-learning methods in its engineering workflows. DEP describes its use of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), in which governing physical relationships are incorporated into the training process.

DEP's technical material describes the use of finite-element equations and fluid-dynamics relationships, including Navier–Stokes equations and large eddy simulation (LES), as part of its physics-informed modelling approach.

DEP has reported validation results for several engineering applications, including aerodynamic drag, structural stiffness, crash analysis and natural-frequency prediction. The reported results include cases with less than 3% error for selected aerodynamic and structural predictions, more than 95% R² correlation for a reported crash application, and less than 5% error for a reported natural-frequency application.
