Draft:Deogen (Cryptid)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Other spellings: Diogen, Deagen, Daigen

The Deogen, Also known as De Ogen or The Eyes (translation from Dutch) is a spirit in Cryptozoology that was told to haunt the Sonian Forest in Belgium. The Deogen's appearance is said to be a fog that resides in the forest, often green or white, and resembling the shape of a human[1]. It has empty eye sockets, which are dark and void full. This ghost is seen with small dark, shadowy figures that lurk near and dart through the fog, believed to be the shadows of the children that had been slain by it.

The Deogen is said to make drivers veer off course from the roads. Witnesses claim to have heard the hysteria of children laughing echo through the woods as the mist of the Deogen disappears. Bloody handprints are told to appear on driver's windows, but to dissapear soon after[2][3]

Possible origins

[edit]

According to a Legend in De Kinderen van Het Bezeten Bos (translated to Children of the Haunted Forest); a book written in 1937[4], Nuns found the burned bodies of children in the Sonian Forest. According to these legends, around 80 children were murdered from the Deogen, but a more reasonable, accepted number is only eight. [3][2] The discovery of these children found dead in the woods has also been linked to a serial killer.

Witnesses also claim to have felt something large staring at them, hence the name Deogen (translating to The Eyes)[4]

Possible Explanations

[edit]

Not much is known about this cryptid besides this book, which has been seen as a work of fiction. The shadowy figures that are seen nearby the fog is told to possibly be the silhouette of a wild boar that was known to roam the forest. Pranksters have also been seen touching cars as well. [3]
