Denzel James (born 10 January 2006) is an advocate for Australian youth, a student, and a community representative. James, on 20 December 2024, has been a Young Ambassador at UNICEF Australia.[1] He has been South Australian Youth Climate Spokesperson since 2023.[2] James has held multiple youth advisory and leadership roles in South Australian government initiatives, including Youth Chairman 2022 to 2025. He has been Student Ambassador at Victoria University, Melbourne since March 2025.[3]
James is a First Nations Australian and Māori who was born in Adelaide, South Australia. He began his education at Blair Athol North School before moving to Avenues College[4], attending Oodnadatta Area School[5] for a time before returning to Avenues College where he ultimately finished his schooling and graduated in 2024 with the South Australian Certificate of Education.[6]
After finishing his schooling, James did foundation studies to help him get into tertiary education. He subsequently attended Victoria University,[3] where he is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws degree. With assistance from the Indigenous Academic Unit Moondani Balluk, he transitioned into university study.
Thanks to his advocacy participation in national and international youth forums such as WIPCE (World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education)[7] in Aotearoa New Zealand, along with participating in policy discussions relating to youth, wellbeing, education, and climate change.[8]
Education
[edit]James started secondary school at Avenues College[4] in Year 8. Midway through that year, he relocated to Oodnadatta Area School[5] in 2019, before returning to Avenues College to complete his studies.
He worked part-time at Subway while studying to support himself financially.[9]
Youth advocacy and leadership
[edit]James became involved in youth representation through the South Australian School Representative Council and later served as Youth Chairman from 2022 to 2025.[10]
UNICEF Australia
[edit]James joined UNICEF Australia in July 2023 and became the South Australian Youth Climate Spokesperson.[1]
