Delta Phi Nu (ΔΦΝ) is a non-Panhellenic Canadian women’s fraternity with eleven chapters in two provinces. It was founded on May 14, 2008 at Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario.

History

[edit]

Delta Phi Nu was founded by Samantha Fox and Rebecca Gillespie at Fleming College. Fox felt Canadian post-secondary institutions lacked spaces for women and decided to challenge Greek Life stereotypes, stating, “We are not a fraternity that breaks down women to make them great, we are a fraternity that takes great women and makes them amazing.” A third founder only known as Caroline fell out with Fox and Gillespie regarding the inclusion of non-binary people in the organization and is not listed as an official founder.[1]

Delta Phi Nu has expanded across Ontario and Nova Scotia with 11 chapters in total.

Symbols and traditions

[edit]

Coat of arms

[edit]

The Delta Phi Nu coat of arms consists of a shield with a feather and blue delphinium, the fraternity’s flower. Behind the shield is goddess Athena. The shield is inlaid with a book to represent the fraternity’s values and is flanked by a moon and seashells to represent the family line of members stemming from the founders. A recent family line has been added and is represented by the symbol ocean. At the top of the crest is a snowy owl, which was deemed the fraternity’s mascot in 2013. The current coat of arms was designed in 2022 by an alumnae sister. [1]

Colors

[edit]

The colors of Delta Phi Nu are light blue, white and silver. Its flower is the blue delphinium and was chosen in 2020. Its jewel is the diamond.[1]

Patron divinities

[edit]

Delta Phi Nu also recognizes Greek goddesses as their symbols. The goddesses are Aphrodite, Athena and Artemis.

Badge

[edit]
Delta Phi Nu sorority pledge badge

Delta Phi Nu’s pledge badge consists of a silver triangle representing the Greek Letter Delta with a snowy owl in the center, wings outstretched to represent being welcomed with open arms. It was adopted in January 2022.[1]

Member badges consist of a similar pattern with a silver triangle connected by a chain to a diamond, representing the unbreakable bond between sisters and the fraternity. It was incorporated in 2021.

Motto

[edit]

Delta Phi Nu has two mottos, one public and one only known to initiated members. The open motto is “In loyalty, in knowledge and in perseverance, we pledge”.[1]

Activities

[edit]

Delta Phi Nu hosts an annual national conference known as Deltacon on Founder’s Day, May 14. This gives active sisters the chance to meet alumnae and sisters from other chapters and also features an awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the fraternity. Deltacon also focuses strongly on mental health awareness and often has guest speakers from Canadian organizations.[1]

Delta Phi Nu also practices “Sober Power Hour” and does not allow sisters to consume alcohol within the first hour of an event.

Philanthropy

[edit]

Canadian Mental Health Association

Delta Phi Nu recognizes the Canadian Mental Health Association as its national philanthropy. Funding from events hosted by the fraternity go to CMHA and chapters may also choose to donate a portion to their local fraternity in addition to the national.[2][1]

Governance

[edit]

Active sisters may participate in their chapter’s leadership roles after a period of six months has passed since their initiation. Alumnae of the fraternity have the opportunity to be involved in the National Council and oversee various chapters across the country. The National Council also revises bylaws and the pledge handbook annually and assesses the fraternity’s financial standing.[1]

The Blue Delphinium Society recognizes alumnae as their own chapter and offers three tiers of membership that dictates the level of involvement they have with active members.[1]
