Debarag Banerjee (also credited as D. N. Banerjee in academic literature) is an Indian-born, Silicon Valley-based computer scientist, engineer, and technology executive specialising in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. He currently serves as the Chief AI and Data Officer (CAIDO) at L&T Finance, one of India's largest non-banking financial companies, where he leads AI transformation across a lending portfolio serving over 20 million borrowers.
Banerjee holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur). He holds 17 US patents and has authored 13 peer-reviewed publications and conference papers, with over 781 academic citations across his career.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Banerjee attended South Point High School in Kolkata, graduating in 1990. He subsequently completed his undergraduate studies at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, graduating with a B.Tech in Electronics and Communications Engineering in 1994. He subsequently moved to the United States, earning a Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 1997, before pursuing doctoral studies at Stanford University.
He earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, attending from 1999 to 2003.[3] His doctoral dissertation, titled Location Aided Receivers for Wireless Communication, was supervised by Professor Arogyaswami Paulraj, a pioneer in MIMO wireless technology. During his doctoral work, he developed location-aided receivers for wireless communication, inventing a method of using stored channel characteristics from different locations to optimize wireless communication links.[4][5]
Career
[edit]Early career and entrepreneurship (1996–2014)
[edit]Banerjee began his industry career at Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services in Richardson, Texas, where he worked as a Systems Engineer in the Satellite Systems department from 1996 to 1998.[2] He subsequently held engineering roles at Philips Semiconductor (now part of NXP Semiconductors) from 1999 to 2001,[2][6][7] National Semiconductor (acquired by Texas Instruments in 2011) from 2001 to 2003,[2][8] and Lockheed Martin Space Systems from 2003 to 2004, where he served as a Senior Staff Systems Engineer.[2]
At Lockheed Martin, he worked on wireless architecture for the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), the U.S. Navy's satellite-based mobile communications system, where WCDMA was validated as a viable 3G radio access technology for military use.[citation needed] At Raytheon, he is credited as a satellite controller design engineer on Trojan Spirit II, a U.S. Army tactical ground communications system.[citation needed] He also represented Samsung Telecom before the standards committee that developed TIA-95, the first CDMA wireless networking standard.[9][citation needed]
He subsequently joined Intel as Principal Architect, where he contributed to the development of one of the first WiMAX/4G/MID mobile devices — an early milestone in the global transition to mobile broadband networks.[citation needed]
Drawing on his Stanford research in information theory, Banerjee co-founded Avnera Corporation in 2003, a fabless semiconductor startup developing high-fidelity wireless audio chipsets. Avnera grew to serve major consumer electronics brands including Harman, Samsung, Sony, and Sennheiser, and was acquired by Skyworks Solutions (NASDAQ: SWKS) for $405 million in August 2018.[10][11]
In 2009, Banerjee founded a second startup, WiViu Technology Inc., where he invented and patented technology for transmitting and receiving data streams with feedback information over lossy wireless networks,[12] serving as CEO until 2012. From 2012 to 2014, he joined TEOCO as Director of Technology and Products,[13] where he built AI/ML-based solutions for Radio Access Network management deployed across approximately 40 mobile operators globally.[citation needed][14]
Global AI leadership (2015–2024)
[edit]In 2015, Banerjee joined Reliance Jio as Senior Vice President and Chief Data Scientist, becoming part of the core leadership team behind one of the most ambitious telecom launches in history.[15]
When Jio launched its pan-India 4G LTE network in September 2016, it acquired over 100 million subscribers within its first 170 days — faster than any technology company in the world at the time.[16] Banerjee led the development of a petabyte-scale network data science platform, heading a team of data scientists and engineers to support this rollout.
In 2018, Banerjee moved to Myntra as Head of Fashion Data Science.[2][13] During his tenure, Myntra — Flipkart's fashion subsidiary — deployed Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to auto-generate designs for its private label brands Moda Rapido and Here&Now, significantly reducing time-to-market for new collections. That same year, Flipkart was acquired by Walmart in a landmark $16 billion deal, one of the largest e-commerce acquisitions in history.
From 2018 to 2022, Banerjee served as Global Head of Data Science and AI at Agoda, part of Booking Holdings and one of the largest online travel agencies in the Asia-Pacific region.[13][17] Leading a team of 49 data scientists, he oversaw AI initiatives across multiple product and business verticals, with the team delivering breakthroughs across more than 20 projects during his tenure.
In 2022, Banerjee founded MachinAnimus, an enterprise AI consultancy focused on helping businesses build and deploy AI products at scale.[18] Concurrently, in December 2023, he joined Presto Automation Inc. (then NASDAQ: PRST) as Head of Voice Engineering.[19] At Presto, he worked on autonomous AI voice-ordering systems for the restaurant industry, applying automatic speech recognition and large language model techniques to real-world customer interactions. Presto Automation later went private.[20]
L&T Finance (2024–present)
[edit]In 2024, Banerjee joined L&T Finance as Chief AI and Data Officer (CAIDO), overseeing AI strategy and implementation across a $12 billion lending portfolio serving over 20 million borrowers across India.[21][22] His work has focused on expanding credit access for underserved and first-time borrowers, applying AI to lending decisions in a market where traditional credit scoring methods often exclude large segments of the population.
Under his leadership, L&T Finance built a two-stage AI lending pipeline. Cyclops handles real-time loan underwriting, processing applications in under four seconds by combining traditional credit scores with alternative data such as bank statements, payment history, and spending patterns.[23][17] Once a loan is disbursed, Nostradamus takes over, monitoring borrower behaviour for early signs of economic stress to enable timely interventions.[22]
KAI, a multimodal AI chatbot, handles customer service in multiple Indian languages.[21] Banerjee has also introduced RODI (Return on Data Investment), a framework for measuring whether new data sources yield improved lending outcomes relative to their acquisition cost, formalised in an academic paper co-authored with K. Kumar in 2024.[24]
In 2025, Banerjee provided testimony to the Reserve Bank of India's FREE-AI Committee (Framework for Responsible and Ethical Enablement of Artificial Intelligence) during the shaping of its report on AI adoption in the Indian financial sector, published in August 2025.[citation needed][25]
In 2026, Banerjee co-authored a research paper titled "Life Style Levels: Neighborhood Delineation using Geospatial Data", published on arXiv, proposing a scalable framework for mapping urban affluence across 59 Indian cities using geospatial data - with direct applications to consumer loan delinquency analysis.[26]

Recognition and Public Engagement
[edit]Banerjee has been a keynote speaker at several major AI and financial services forums in India and internationally. These include the AI Summit and Awards 2026,[citation needed] RAISE 2024,[15] Cypher 2024[27] and Cypher 2025 (Analytics India Magazine),[28] and the Economic Times AI Conclave & Awards 2025. He was a guest on the CAIO Connect Podcast, where he discussed enterprise AI strategy, agentic AI governance, and the concept of RODI.[22]
He has also spoken at the Chief AI Officer Summit in Silicon Valley, addressing architectural failures in agentic AI systems.
At the AI Summit and Awards 2026, L&T Finance was recognised with the Best Leader for Tech Transformation in NBFC award, in recognition of the organisation's AI-driven lending innovation under Banerjee's leadership.[citation needed] L&T Finance also received the Best Digital Experience in Finance award at the Global Fintech Fest 2025.[29]
