[edit]Dawnguard was founded in 2025 by cybersecurity professionals Mahdi Abdulrazak and Kim van Lavieren.[5]
Abdulrazak previously worked in cybersecurity and risk leadership roles, including at SHV Energy, while Van Lavieren served in cybersecurity positions including work in the Royal Netherlands Navy and security engineering leadership roles at Amazon.[1][2][5]
The founders met during a gathering of chief information security officers (CISOs) in the Netherlands and subsequently established Dawnguard around the concept of automating security architecture using artificial intelligence technologies.[5]
In July 2025, Dawnguard emerged from stealth and announced a US$3 million pre-seed financing round led by 9900 Capital with participation from angel investors.[1][3]
The funding round received coverage in several European technology publications, including Tech.eu, EU-Startups and MT/Sprout.[6][7][5]
In July 2026, Dawnguard announced that its platform had entered general availability following a period of development with enterprise design partners. The company also announced additional pre-seed financing from BNVT Capital, Curiosity VC and eCAPITAL, bringing total disclosed funding to more than US$6 million, and the opening of a New York office as part of its expansion into the United States market.[2][4]

The platform is designed to help organizations design secure cloud architectures, validate security controls before deployment, generate infrastructure-as-code configurations and continuously verify that deployed environments remain aligned with approved security designs.[2][3][4]
According to independent reporting, the platform uses multiple AI models trained on security frameworks, cloud architecture guidance and compliance requirements to automate tasks that have traditionally been performed manually by security architects and engineering teams.[3][5]
According to Forbes and SecurityWeek, the company developed the platform in collaboration with more than a dozen enterprise organizations that acted as design partners and provided feedback during product development.[2][4]
