The Danish Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS) is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark. Established in its current form in 2016, the institute supports basic research and brings together researchers from the university's five faculties. Its researchers work across the humanities, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering and the social sciences.[1][2]
A 2021 analysis commissioned by the Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy examined DIAS as one of several organizational initiatives established by Danish universities to support interdisciplinary research. The report described DIAS as an autonomous unit operating across the University of Southern Denmark's traditional faculty structure, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research and the development of early-career researchers.[1]
History
[edit]The origins of DIAS date to 2009, when physicist Francesco Sannino and organizational theorist Thorbjørn Knudsen began developing plans for an institute for advanced study at the University of Southern Denmark.[2] A publication by the Danish National Research Foundation also identifies Sannino as having helped establish the institute.[3]
DIAS officially opened in its present interdisciplinary form in 2016. Sannino and Knudsen served as co-directors, chairs were appointed from each of the university's five faculties, and the institute's first research fellowship began that year.[2][1][4]
Marianne Holmer, then dean of the university's Faculty of Science, became director in 2019.[2] A dedicated DIAS building at Fioniavej was subsequently completed and opened to affiliated researchers in 2020.[2]
Political scientist Sten Rynning was appointed director with effect from 1 August 2023, initially serving alongside Holmer during a transitional period. The director reports directly to the university's rector.[5]
In February 2024, DIAS established a Society of Fellows for early-career researchers. The institute also introduced mentoring and interdisciplinary research initiatives as part of a broader reorganization of its programmes.[6][2]
Organization
[edit]DIAS is part of the University of Southern Denmark but operates outside the university's conventional faculty structure. Researchers affiliated with DIAS remain employed through their respective university faculties rather than directly by the institute.[1]
The institute's academic community includes chairs, senior fellows, fellows, visiting fellows and affiliated researchers.[7] Chairs are generally established researchers who participate in the interdisciplinary environment and mentor fellows. Fellows are principally early-career researchers selected to pursue independent research while participating in the institute's academic activities.[1]
The 2021 Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy report described DIAS fellowships as four-year appointments that could be extended for two additional years. It stated that candidates were assessed on research quality, interdisciplinary participation, contribution to academic activities and ability to obtain external research funding.[1]
The institute is headed by a director and supported by a management committee, an advisory board and an administrative secretariat. According to the 2021 report, the director is appointed by the university rector and is responsible for the institute's activities, strategy and internal organization.[1]
Research activities
[edit]DIAS supports interdisciplinary research through fellowships, mentoring, collaborative research initiatives, visiting appointments, lectures and workshops.[8]
Society of Fellows
[edit]The Society of Fellows is a self-governing community for early-career researchers from different disciplines. It organizes weekly seminars, research presentations, career-development activities, grant-writing workshops and visits to research environments at the University of Southern Denmark.[6]
The society also administers a visiting fellow programme for researchers employed elsewhere within the university. Visiting fellows receive temporary affiliation with DIAS and participate in its seminars, lectures and professional-development activities. The programme normally appoints two researchers from each of the university's five faculties, producing an annual cohort of ten visiting fellows.[9]
Mentoring and collaborative projects
[edit]The Blue Sky Mentoring programme pairs fellows with DIAS chairs, including researchers from disciplines different from their own. The programme is intended to encourage mentoring and intellectual exchange between established and early-career researchers.[10]
DIAS Explorations provides a framework for collaborative projects addressing broad research questions. Projects supported through the initiative have considered Danish capitalism, connections between climate, health and nature in West Africa, and the social implications of robots in everyday life.[11]
The institute also supports research clusters formed by researchers from different departments and faculties. These groups organize seminars, workshops and collaborative research activities around shared subjects.[12]
Building
[edit]DIAS is based in a purpose-built extension to the University of Southern Denmark's campus in Odense. According to the Danish Building and Property Agency, the building covers 3,545 m2 (38,160 sq ft) and had a construction budget of 80.8 million Danish kroner.[13]
The building was designed by CREO Arkitekter and ZESO Architects, with engineering consultancy provided by MOE. It consists of two principal floors, a lower-ground level, a central courtyard, a roof garden, offices, meeting facilities and an auditorium. A connecting passage links it with the existing university complex.[13]
Partnerships
[edit]DIAS is a founding member of NordIAS, a network of eight institutes for advanced study in the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The network developed from the Beyond Advanced Studies workshop series, held between November 2021 and May 2022 with support from the Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils in the Humanities and Social Sciences. NordIAS was formally established in 2023 to support academic exchanges and cooperation among its member institutes.[14][15]
The other members are Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, Tampere Institute for Advanced Study and Turku Institute for Advanced Studies.[14]
NordIAS operates a visiting fellowship programme through which fellows may spend between one and three weeks at another member institute.[14]
In 2026, the network announced an interdisciplinary fellowship programme in health and sustainability supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. DIAS participates in the programme as an associated partner, hosting events and researcher-mobility visits.[16]
