Daniel Wallace Maze is an art historian specializing in Italian Renaissance art, particularly Giovanni Bellini and Venetian workshop practice. He is the author of Young Bellini (Yale University Press, 2021), a study that reconsiders Bellini's birth, family relationships, and early career.[1][2]

Education and career

[edit]

Maze studied philosophy at Williams College and completed graduate work in art history at the University of California, Los Angeles. He held a Samuel H. Kress predoctoral fellowship at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence from 2011 to 2013, a Fulbright scholarship at the University of York in 2016–2017, and a Barbara Thom postdoctoral fellowship at the Huntington Library in 2017–2018.[3] His research on the Bellini workshop received an American Council of Learned Societies fellowship.[4] He later taught Renaissance art at the University of Iowa.[1]

Scholarship

[edit]

In a 2013 article in Renaissance Quarterly, Maze argued from Venetian legal records that Giovanni Bellini was Jacopo Bellini's half-brother rather than his son, and that Giovanni was born in the 1420s, earlier than many modern estimates.[5]

Young Bellini develops that argument into a broader reconstruction of Bellini's early life and work.

Reception

[edit]

The book received published reviews from Christopher J. Nygren in The Art Newspaper, Irene Brooke in The Burlington Magazine, John T. Paoletti in Choice, Meredith J. Gill in Speculum, Silvia Tita in Studies in Iconography, and Steven Cody in The Sixteenth Century Journal.[2][6][7][8][9][10] Nygren described Maze's treatment of the archival evidence as a “thorough recontextualisation” and wrote that its revised chronology could produce a “paradigm shift” in Bellini studies.[2]

Film work

[edit]

Before his academic career, Maze wrote and directed the independent drama Ten Hundred Kings under the name D.W. Maze. A Williams College Philosophy alumni page identifies Daniel W. Maze as a filmmaker and states that he wrote and directed Ten Hundred Kings, which was scheduled to premiere at the Austin Film Festival in October 2000.[11] The film stars Bill Camp and Elizabeth Marvel as a married couple struggling after the death of their child. Dennis Schwartz, reviewing the film after a screening at the Williamstown Film Festival, called it a “brilliant and moving indie drama” and praised its tension, performances, and emotional complexity.[12] Film Threat described it as a “solid drama,” highlighting its layered treatment of secrets within the couple’s marriage, its departure from a standard three-act structure, and the performances by Camp and Marvel.[13]

Submission note and conflict-of-interest disclosure

Place a short disclosure on the draft’s talk page and on your user page. Plain language is better than trying to sound detached:

I am Daniel Wallace Maze, the subject of this draft. I therefore have a conflict of interest. I am submitting the article through Articles for Creation and welcome independent review. I will not directly edit any eventual mainspace article except to make edit requests on its talk page. Before submitting

Create the draft through Articles for Creation: Paste the wikitext into a Draft namespace page rather than publishing directly into the encyclopedia. Keep the independent reception central: The draft now names and cites all six published reviews identified in the supplied record. Nygren’s Art Newspaper review is the strongest accessible source for summarizing the book’s scholarly argument; the remaining reviews establish the breadth of reception without attributing claims that have not been checked in their full texts. Treat the film section proportionately: The Schwartz and Film Threat reviews support a short account of Ten Hundred Kings and its reception. Avoid expanding the filmography beyond what reliable sources can verify. Avoid self-sourcing where independence matters: The Yale page and institutional biographies can verify routine facts, but they should not carry claims of influence, importance, or notability. Invite independent editing: After submission, allow reviewers to decide the title, structure, and whether the article is ready for mainspace. SOURCE LINKS USED IN THE DRAFT

These points are not settled well enough in the accessible sources to state more strongly in the draft:

Current professional status: The supplied materials alternately describe an Iowa appointment through 2023 and independent-scholar status beginning in 2024. The former Iowa profile URL now opens a general people directory rather than an individual biography. Add “independent scholar” or “retired associate professor” only when an independent, current source supports it. Exact Iowa title and dates: The draft says only that Maze taught at Iowa. Confirm the promotion to Fountiene Lee Duda Associate Professor, service as Head of Art History, tenure date, and retirement in a reliable public source before adding them. Review metadata: The Sixteenth Century Journal record and Studies in Iconography repository have been checked online. Verify the remaining journal issue and page details against the published issues before submission, especially the Burlington Magazine, Choice, and Speculum entries supplied from the CV. Getty catalog chapter: Confirm the full catalog title, publisher, editor, and page range in a library catalog or the book itself before retaining the selected-work citation. Citation metrics: The Academia screenshot reports 29 citing papers and 524 mentions. Those figures are promotional, fluid, and not suitable for the article without a stronger bibliometric source, so the draft omits them. Recommended article length: Keep the first submission close to this stub. Additional CV material—teaching lists, service, minor grants, conference panels, and book reviews written by Maze—does not improve the article unless independent sources discuss it.
