Daniel Marsala (born November 3, 1980)[1] is an American musician, singer, guitarist, and drummer. He is best known for being the lead vocalist and founding member of the post-hardcore band Story of the Year. He also serves as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the punk rock band The Fuck Off and Dies.
Early Life
[edit]Marsala grew up on Page Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri, where he would get his start in music, singing and playing guitar for a local church group. He later met childhood friend John Oakes, future manager of Story of the Year, with whom he would practice music using cheap and makeshift equipment. Afterwards, he joined a short-lived band called Humblebee, before eventually joining 67 North: Story of the Year's predecessor.[2]
Musical Career
[edit]67 North, Big Blue Monkey, and Story of The Year (1995-2011, 2013-present)
[edit]In 1995, Marsala formed 67 North as the drummer with fellow band mates John Taylor, Ryan Phillips, and Perry West, before renaming themselves to Big Blue Monkey in 1998. Marsala served as the band's drummer until he became the band's lead vocalist, following the departure of Taylor[2]
Marsala has since served as the lead vocalist on every Story of the Year release since the band renamed themselves for the second time in 2002.[3]
The Fuck Off and Dies (2009-present)
[edit]Marsala formed comedy rock/punk rock 4-piece The Fuck Off and Dies (sometimes abbreviated to TFOAD) in 2009 as the lead vocalist and guitarist[4]. The band writes fast-paced punk songs featuring excessive swearing and themes of alcoholism. They have been noted to have Direct Hit!, Teenage Bottlerocket, and The Bouncing Souls influences, along with openly expressing their NOFX influence.[5]
The majority of their music is recorded, mixed, and mastered by Marsala at Hellhole Studios, which is located in his basement.[6]
During Story of the Year's 2010-2013 hiatus, Marsala started recording music with the band, releasing 2 EPs before the band's reunion, and 1 full-length album and 2 EPs afterwards they had gotten back together.[6]
Greek Fire (2012)
[edit]Following drummer Johnny Venus's diagnosis of Acute promyelocytic leukemia, Marsala briefly served as the touring drummer for the band Greek Fire in 2012, led by former Story of the Year guitarist and bassist Phillip Sneed. Marsala filled in for a few months until Venus could return.[7]
Personal Life
[edit]Marsala lives in St. Louis, Missouri, with his wife and 2 kids.[8][9]
