Development

[edit]

After the success of Lubber Pandhu (2024), director Tamizharasan Pachamuthu was listed among the directors waiting to make Dhanush's next film. It was reported that the former had narrated a story to the actor, who was impressed. The film was expected to begin shooting around July or August 2025, with Dawn Pictures going to produce it.[1] In February 2025, reports emerg that Anirudh Ravichander had reportedly been signed to compose the music.[2] Later in August, in an interview published by Cinema Express, Tamizharasan said his next directorial venture was being written for a star, without naming Dhanush. He explained that he began writing the project after meeting the actor, the story was being crafted specifically for that actor, he was consciously writing with the star's image in mind, and was putting more effort into this screenplay than he had on Lubber Pandhu.[3] On 14 September, at the Idli Kadai (2025) audio launch, Tamizharasan made a deliberately teasing reference to the project.[4] Then, on 20 September, exactly one year after Lubber Pandhu's release, Tamizharasan made the collaboration explicit, tentatively titled D56.[5]

Pre-production

[edit]

On 29 December 2025, producer Aakash Baskaran of Dawn Pictures said the film was expected to begin filming in March / April 2026. That ultimately did not happen.[6] On 4 March 2026, Tamizharasan announced that he had started location recce for the film.[7] A few days, it was reported that Madurai was being used for location scouting / intended production.[8] Although Anirudh was initially reported, Sai Abhyankkar was confirmed in September 2026 as music composer.[9] Tamizharasan revealed Veeramani Ganesan as the art director when responding to a fan asking for an update.[10] A muhurat puja was initially scheduled to be held in late August, but was cancelled.[11][12] In early August, it was reported that Dhanush was still completing the final stages of Om, and that this project was expected to begin shooting after he completes Om.[13] In mid August, reports claimed that the project was targeting a late-September puja and filming was expected to begin in the first week of October.[14] In mid September, the production house was reportedly changed from Dawn Pictures to Sithara Entertainment, with Dhanush co-producing under Wunderbar Films.[15][16] The puja was held on 25 September with the film's cast and crew in Madurai.[17][18] Sithara Entertainments formally announced the project the same day, confirming a co-production with Primark Productions.[19]

Casting

[edit]

On 9 March 2026, Vijay Kumar publicly interacted with Tamizharasan about joining the project after finishing Arivu.[8] The same month, reports began linking Rukmini Vasanth to the film. She was reportedly being considered opposite Dhanush.[20][11] S. J. Suryah announced his presence in the film, during his arrival to Madurai for the film's puja in late-September.[18] Vadivelu, Vijay Kumar and Preity Mukhundhan were confirmed being part of the cast, during their presence in the puja.[19][21]

Music

[edit]

The soundtrack is composed by Sai Abhyankkar, in his second collaboration with Dhanush after Om and first with Tamizharasan.[22]
