CultJam is an American freestyle and contemporary R&B musical group led by founding members Mike Hughes and Alex "Spanador" Moseley. The group was originally formed in New York City in 1984 before evolving into the multi-platinum recording act Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. In 2023, Hughes and Moseley revived the original CultJam name with Mystina Sol as lead vocalist, re-establishing the group as an active recording and touring act.[1][2]
Since reforming, CultJam has released new music, resumed national touring, and has been featured in publications including AllHipHop, NYS Music, RightOn! Digital, and BELLA Magazine for its revival and current recording projects.[3][4]
History

[edit]CultJam was founded in New York City in 1984 by musicians Mike Hughes and Alex "Spanador" Moseley. Shortly after the group's formation, vocalist Lisa Velez joined the project and adopted the stage name Lisa Lisa. The group subsequently became known professionally as Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam.[1]
Working with the production team Full Force, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam became one of the best-known freestyle acts of the 1980s. Between 1985 and 1991 the group released four studio albums, earned multiple gold and platinum certifications, and recorded several Billboard hit singles including "I Wonder If I Take You Home", "Head to Toe", "Lost in Emotion", and "Let the Beat Hit 'Em".[1]
Revival
[edit]In 2023, Hughes and Moseley revived the original CultJam name with singer and songwriter Mystina Sol as lead vocalist.[2][5]
Rather than continuing under the Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam name, Hughes and Moseley chose to return to the group's original identity while developing new recordings and performances with a new lineup. Since reforming, CultJam has released original music while also performing selections associated with the original group's catalog.[3]
The group's return has been covered by several music publications, including NYS Music, BELLA Magazine, RightOn! Digital, and AllHipHop, which have documented the band's new recordings, national touring schedule, and interviews with Hughes and Mystina Sol discussing the group's history and future direction.[2][3][4]
Following the release of the Lifetime television film Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story in 2025, Hughes and Sol appeared in an interview with AllHipHop discussing the film, the history of CultJam, and the group's continued recording and touring activities.[4]
Current activities
[edit]The current incarnation of CultJam performs throughout the United States, combining songs associated with Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with newly recorded original material. The group continues to record and release new music while maintaining an active touring schedule.[3][2]
