Crossbone Skully is an American hard rock project created by musician Tommy Henriksen, best known as a guitarist for Alice Cooper and a member of Hollywood Vampires. The project combines recorded music with comic books and animated media to present a fictional universe centred on the title character, Crossbone Skully.
Crossbone Skully released its debut studio album, Evil World Machine, on 22 November 2024. Executive produced by Mutt Lange, the album features guest appearances from Phil Collen and Nikki Sixx.
History
[edit]Formation and Development
[edit]Tommy Henriksen has said the project originated after he experimented with an AC/DC-inspired vocal style during sound checks while touring, leading him to begin writing material while working between studios in Switzerland and Los Angeles.[1]
During production of the project's debut album, Henriksen collaborated with Swedish guitarist Tommy Denander, who co-produced and co-wrote material for the record. Denander later introduced Henriksen to producer Mutt Lange, who served as executive producer and co-wrote the songs "I'm Unbreakable" and "The Last Night on Earth".[1]
The project subsequently signed with Better Noise Music, which released Evil World Machine in November 2024.
Evil World Machine (2022–2025)
[edit]Crossbone Skully released a series of singles beginning in 2022 ahead of its debut album, including "Evil World Machine", "The Boom Went the Boom", "I'm Unbreakable", "Money, Sex, or God", "Everyone's on Dope" and "High on You", the latter featuring Nikki Sixx.
The debut studio album, Evil World Machine, was released on 22 November 2024.
Classic Rock Magazine awarded the album 9/10[2], while Metal Talk included it among its best metal albums of 2024[3]. The album also received favourable reviews from Metal Planet Music and The Rockpit.[4][5]
In November 2024, Crossbone Skully performed its first live concerts at the Viper Room in Los Angeles.[6]
Multimedia project
[edit]In addition to music, Crossbone Skully includes comic books and animated media set within the project's fictional universe. Artwork for the project was created by illustrator Mark Wilkinson, whose work has also appeared on releases by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.[7][8]
The accompanying comic series is published by Source Point Press. An animated adaptation features voice performances by Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, Nikki Sixx, Kane Roberts, Mark Wilkinson and other collaborators.[9]
Musical Style
[edit]Critics have described Crossbone Skully as a hard rock project drawing comparisons with AC/DC and Def Leppard. Reviewing Evil World Machine, Classic Rock noted similarities to both bands, while other reviewers noted influences from classic arena rock. [2]. Reviewers have compared Henriksen's vocal style to those of Bon Scott, Joe Elliott and Tom Keifer.[10]
