Crazy Cock (Whiskey)

[edit]

Crazy Cock is a line of Indian single malt whisky produced by South Seas Distilleries.[1]The whisky first launched in 2023 and is made in and aged in the coastal city of Dahanu, Maharashtra.[2]Crazy Cock makes both unpeated and peated whiskies and has released whiskies aged in ex-Mahura (Madhuca) wood.[3][4]

Background

[edit]

Crazy Cock was founded in 1984 and was originally a business-to-business operation selling malt spirits.[5]The company started working on creating their own single malt whisky brand ahead of its 2023 launch.[6]

The brand was released to the public in 2023, initially releasing 1,512 bottles in Maharashtra, Goa, and Haryana.[7]

Production

[edit]

The Crazy Cock whisky is made using copper pot stills at the company's distillery in Dahanu.[8][9]Aging occurs in Dahanu, which has a climate that is thought to accelerate the spirit-cask interaction more than a temperate climate.[10]

Expressions

[edit]

This line has an unpeated expression that is aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, while the peated expression has a name "Dhua."[11]In 2024, the company launched single malt expressions that have been matured in casks where Mahura, an Indian spirit made from flowers of Madhuca longifolia was stored.[12][13][14]

Recognition

[edit]

Crazy Cock has also found its way into lists of recommended Indian whiskies as featured in Tasting Table.[15]
