Comment: Many of the sources are simply press releases (some of which are in different publications but they are all based on the PR; others are blogs, or low quality. The one good source is the review by Robert C. Morgan in Whitehot Magazine. What is needed to establish notability is significant coverage in reliable sources, that are verifiable and fully independent (secondary sources) that are not connected to the artist or the venue where he showed his work. - Comment: Thanks for reviewing the article.The prior version of the draft included third-party coverage from a Japanese cultural institute in New York and from an art magazine. After the draft was declined, I followed up by email providing additional links to the artist’s work and published reviews, with the intention of asking for guidance on which sources would best meet Wikipedia’s criteria for independent, reliable secondary coverage.In the current revision, I have expanded the sourcing further by adding analysis from established art critics, journalists, and an academic affiliated with a U.S. university. Costas Picadas (born 1966) is a Greek-born visual artist based in New York City. He works across painting, photography, video, and installation, and is known for artworks that draw on biological forms, ecological systems, and scientific imagery. His work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions in Europe, North America, and Asia.[1]
Biography
[edit]Costas Picadas was born in Ioannina, Greece. He studied fine arts at the École des Beaux-Arts and art history at the Louvre School in Paris before relocating to New York City in the early 1990s, where he has since lived and worked.[2]
His upbringing in a family with medical backgrounds and his academic training in Europe contributed to a long-term interest in the intersection of art, nature, and science.[3]

His practice spans painting, photography, video, and moving-image installations, often drawing parallels between scientific visualization and expressive abstraction.[10] Picadas’s work incorporates imagery of microscopic cells, biomes, and ecological networks, rendered through layered abstraction in painting, photography, and digital media. Art critic Robert C. Morgan describes his practice as a "betrothal between science and nature," noting that Picadas uses biomes and homologies to explore the interiority of the human body and its connection to the external environment.[11]
In his series Biomes and Homologies, Picadas utilizes large-scale canvases and mixed-media works on paper to depict cell-like configurations and branching organic forms. Curator Thalia Vrachopoulos has characterized his use of color as soft and layered, relating his biomorphic motifs to protozoa and biological cells, and has connected his recurring focus on healing to a family background in medicine.[12]
His 2020 video installation, Biophilia, expanded these themes into time-based media, exploring processes of natural growth and biological decay.[13] According to critic Donald Brackett, Picadas’s photographic work seeks to recombine fragments of reality in order to “freeze both space and time,” emphasizing transformation rather than documentation.[14]
Critical reception
[edit]Picadas’s work has received coverage in art journals and cultural publications, with critics emphasizing both its formal qualities and its engagement with environmental and biological themes. Reviewing his exhibition at the Tenri Cultural Institute, ArteFuse described his work as a complex field of cell-like forms that reference healing processes within bodies and ecosystems.[15]
Jonathan Goodman, writing for Tussle Magazine, characterized Picadas’s paintings as adopting a lyrical approach to nature, combining near-representational detail with abstraction. Goodman suggested that this romanticized treatment of forests and cellular imagery functions as an ethical response to ecological damage.[13]
Coverage in the Greek newspaper To Vima discussed Picadas’s exhibition at the Santorini Contemporary Art Museum, noting that his work aims to move beyond emotional provocation toward broader reflections on perception, well-being, and humanity’s relationship with nature. The article also noted that reviews and analyses of his work have appeared in international publications including Whitehot Magazine, Absolute Arts, and Flash Art.[16]
His exhibitions have also received coverage in Greek news and cultural outlets. The exhibition Phytobiosomes (2025), presented at the Henry Dunant Hospital Center in Athens, was reported on by publications including Nextdeal and Cosmopoliti, which highlighted its interdisciplinary focus on art, health, and biology.[17][18]
