This article is about the financial technology company Convera, not to be confused with the search platform provider Convera Corporation. The two companies have no relation, past or present. Convera Corporation merged with Firstlight ERA in February 2010 to form NTENT and no longer operates under the Convera name.

Convera USA, LLC, previously known as Western Union Business Solutions, is a privately owned global financial technology company.[1] Headquartered in Denver, Colorado and London, United Kingdom, Convera was founded following the acquisition of Western Union Business Solutions by Goldfinch Partners, LLC and The Baupost Group, LLC.[2] Convera offers services related to cross-border payments, foreign exchange risk management, and payment APIs.[3]

History

On September 1, 2009, Western Union acquired the Canada-based foreign payments company Custom House for $371 million.[4] Originally formed as a retail money exchange provider, Custom House offered currency exchange and wire transfer services to businesses in over 40 countries.[5] The acquisition expanded Western Union’s global footprint and technological capabilities.[6]

On July 5, 2011, Western Union acquired the Global Business Payments division of Travelex for $933 million.[7][8] In the same year, Western Union consolidated its cross-border B2B services under the name Western Union Business Solutions (WUBS).[9] According to Fortune Magazine, these acquisitions represented an attempt by Western Union to expand its revenue base beyond consumer-to-consumer operations and compete with emerging remittance startups like Remitly and Wise. In 2020, Western Union Business Solutions accounted for 8% of Western Union’s revenue.[10]

On August 4, 2021, private equity firms Goldfinch Partners LLC and The Baupost Group, LLC acquired Western Union Business Solutions for $910 million.[11] Following the transfer of its European operations in late 2023, Western Union Business Solutions was established as a standalone payments company under the new name Convera. In the same year, Patrick Gauthier, former global head of Amazon Pay, was appointed CEO.[12]

FXC Intelligence named Convera to their “Top 100 Cross-Border Payment Companies” list in 2023, 2024, and 2025.[13] Convera was listed as one of “The World’s Top 250 Fintech Companies” by CNBC on July 9, 2024, and again on July 16, 2025.[14][15] Later that year, Convera was named a winner in the 2025 Fintech Breakthrough Awards.[16]

Services

Convera provides financial services focused on international payments and currency risk management.[17] The company offers currency hedging tools, payment APIs, and an online cross-border payment platform called GlobalPay.[18] GlobalPay allows businesses and higher education institutions to send and receive payments in multiple currencies.[19]

Convera also partners with companies such as ADP to provide payroll solutions and Ripple to facilitate cross-border transactions in stablecoins.[20][21]
