Code and Theory
[edit]Code and Theory is an American digital transformation agency headquartered in New York City. It was founded in 2001 by Dan Gardner and Brandon Ralph. The company designs and builds digital platforms, software products and AI systems for corporate, media and enterprise clients[1].
Since 2016, Code and Theory has been majority-owned by the marketing and communications holding company Stagwell and operates offices across North America, Europe and Asia[2]. It serves as the anchor brand of the Code and Theory Network, a group of digital transformation agencies operating under shared leadership and infrastructure[1].
History
[edit]Founding and early development
[edit]In its early years, Code and Theory focused on digital publishing and editorial platforms, later expanding into broader brand, product and experience work for consumer and enterprise clients[1]. During the 2000s, the company worked with organizations in media, technology, sports, finance and consumer goods to develop early digital platforms and products.
In 2008, the agency worked on the launch of The Daily Beast, a digital news publication, balancing the website’s information architecture, design and development. The following year, Code and Theory built a series of custom digital ad units for a Daily Beast advertising partnership with luxury goods maker Bottega Veneta, described at the time as the brand's first major investment in online advertising[3].
Code and Theory redesigned vogue.com in 2010 and again in 2014 as part of broader platform modernization efforts. The 2010 Vogue redesign received a D&AD Digital Design Pencil in 2011[4], and the 2014 relaunch was covered independently by Design Week[1][5].
Early internet innovation
[edit]In 2003, Code and Theory created a music site for Sony VIP Classical that featured one of the first Flash video players. Communication Arts reported that software company Macromedia later spotlighted the work on its homepage, raising the agency's profile in custom video-player development[1][6].
International expansion
[edit]Before its acquisition by Stagwell, Code and Theory expanded internationally through the acquisition of Go Beyond Studios, a Manila-based development firm, around November 2012. The office was later rebranded as Code and Theory and became the company's first offshore engineering center.
Stagwell acquisition and network expansion
[edit]In January 2016, Stagwell acquired a majority stake in Code and Theory. Following the acquisition, the company expanded its scale and industry reach, taking on a broader range of enterprise digital transformation, platform engineering and experience design initiatives[7].
- 2021 – Acquisition of Kettle, a 65-person digital agency, expanding capabilities in content production and e-commerce[8][9].
- 2022 – Completion of Stagwell's acquisition of the remaining 49% stake in Instrument for approximately $160 million[10][11].
- 2023 – Consolidation of Y Media Labs (YML) into the Code and Theory Network, alongside Kettle, Rhythm, Truelogic and Mediacurrent—now known as Current[12].
- 2024 – Addition of Instrument and Left Field Labs to the Code and Theory Network[13].
- 2025 – Stagwell acquires Create.Group, a digital communications group based in the Middle East, to expand the Code and Theory Network's presence in the Middle East[14][15][16].
- 2026 – Stagwell acquires QStrauss Consulting, a leading Adobe implementation and consulting company based in Colombia, to further expand the Code and Theory Network's global footprint while adding specialized Adobe implementation expertise[17][18].
Notable work
[edit]Code and Theory has led digital platform, AI and experience-transformation projects across several decades, including:
- Bottega Veneta/The Daily Beast – A custom digital advertising campaign in 2009, among the first of its kind for a luxury brand[3].
- CNN “Magic Wall” – A redesign of CNN's on-air election data visualization tool ahead of the 2018 midterms, which won a Webby Award in 2019[19][20].
- Amazon Ads (2021–present) – A multiyear brand and experience transformation spanning positioning, identity and creative systems[21][22].
- National Football League (NFL) – A redesign of the NFL's mobile app and website[23].
- Qualcomm – Digital platform work supporting the company's expansion beyond mobile into automotive and AI[22].
- NBC – Design and development of the network's “Big Board,” a real-time editorial and data-visualization platform used during election coverage[24]
- Washington Commanders – Digital and brand identity systems supporting the franchise's interim “Washington Football Team” rebrand[25].
- Thomson Reuters – A brand and experience transformation repositioning the company as a technology- and AI-enabled enterprise[26].
- YETI – A redesigned e-commerce platform focused on product discovery and modular front-end architecture[27].
- The Minnesota Star Tribune — A complete business and brand transformation of a 150+-year-old publication[28].
- JBL – Development of answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) strategies using AI agents to analyze consumer search behavior[29][30].
- Time magazine – A redesign of Time's digital platform using a modular, headless architecture[31].
Organization and leadership
[edit]Code and Theory operates as the digital transformation segment of the Stagwell Network[1]. The Code and Theory Network includes Code and Theory, Kettle, Truelogic, Rhythm, Current, Instrument, Left Field Labs and Create.Group. The network operates under shared leadership and infrastructure while maintaining specialized capabilities[1][13][14].
Dan Gardner, co-founder of Code and Theory, has held several executive leadership roles, including chief executive officer and executive chairman of the Code and Theory Network[1]. Under his leadership, the company has received recognition from industry organizations including the Webby Awards, D&AD, Cannes Lions, The One Show, Fast Company's “Most Innovative Companies” list and Ad Age's “A-List”[32]. In 2025, Adweek named Code and Theory its “Innovation Agency of the Year”[32]. In 2026, the company was ranked No. 5 on Ad Age's annual “A-List,” a recognition tied to 17% revenue growth and 35 new clients in 2024[30].
Michael Treff has served as chief executive officer since May 2022. He served as president from October 2017 to April 2022 and has held other leadership roles after joining the company in 2011[33].
Dave DiCamillo has served as chief technology officer since April 2019.
In May 2024, Code and Theory appointed Craig Elimeliah as chief creative officer[34].
Services
[edit]Code and Theory's services span experience design, technology development and digital operations, including:
- Agentic AI, implementation and innovation strategy
- Experience strategy and design for digital products and platforms
- Software engineering and platform implementation
- Content systems and digital publishing infrastructure
- Customer experience and enterprise platform modernization
- Data-informed design, experimentation and optimization
- Ongoing managed services and embedded delivery models
Code and Theory has worked across industries including financial services, media and publishing, retail, healthcare, technology and government. Its early work focused on website platforms, publishing systems and newsroom infrastructure for organizations adapting to digital distribution[1]. Following its acquisition by Stagwell in 2016, the company expanded its scale and enterprise reach while continuing to operate across a broad set of industries and digital platforms[2].
Technology and platforms
[edit]The Machine
[edit]The Machine is an agentic AI operating system built to connect people, tools and data across marketing and technology environments. Positioned as an orchestration layer rather than a replacement platform, it's designed to integrate with clients' existing technology stacks[35][36].
Creative Intelligence System
[edit]Code and Theory partnered with Adobe to develop a creative intelligence system specifically tailored for financial services brands. The platform integrates Adobe's enterprise tools to help finance marketers streamline creative workflows, optimize brand messaging, and ensure compliance in real-time content delivery[37].
Content Operating System for Sports
[edit]Developed in collaboration with Adobe, this content operating system allows sports organizations and teams to operate like modern media companies. The platform optimizes digital asset management, automated publishing workflows, and live audience engagement across direct-to-consumer and stadium digital channels[38].
