Clarissa Ribeiro Pereira de Almeida (born 1977), known as Clarissa Ribeiro, is a Brazilian artist and academic who works across art, science and technology. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo.[1] Her work has been shown at SIGGRAPH Asia, the ISEA symposium, Ars Electronica and the FILE festival in São Paulo.[2][3][4]
Early life and education
[edit]Ribeiro was born in 1977 in Visconde do Rio Branco, Minas Gerais. She graduated in architecture and urbanism from the Federal University of Viçosa in 2002 and received a master's degree from the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo in 2006.[5]
From 2006 to 2011 she was a visiting researcher at the CAiiA-Hub of the Planetary Collegium in the United Kingdom. In 2011 she completed a Ph.D. in visual arts at the University of São Paulo, where she joined the research group Poéticas Digitais.[5]
She later held a Fulbright postdoctoral scholarship at the University of California, Los Angeles, working at the Art|Sci Center and in the laboratory of James Gimzewski.[6][7]
Career
[edit]Ribeiro taught at the University of Fortaleza, where she directed the Lab for Innovations and Prototyping (LIP) and coordinated the CrossLab research group.[7][8]
With Roy Ascott, she developed the Technoetic Arts advanced degree program of the Roy Ascott Studio in Shanghai and was its program director from 2014 to 2015. From 2022 to 2024 she held the Pete Townshend Endowed Senior Lectureship in Performative Technoetics in the same program.[9][10] In 2025 the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts named her an honorary professor and a member of its International Advisory Board.[11]
In 2024 she joined the University of São Paulo as an assistant professor.[1] She also supervises in the university's Graduate Program in Visual Arts.[12] The same year she chaired Consciousness Reframed 2024, a conference on art, consciousness and technology.[13]
Artistic work
[edit]In 2011 her interactive installation Instantes de Metamorfose was shown in an experimental version in São Paulo.[5] In June 2014 the UCLA Art|Sci Gallery presented Performing Quantum Entanglement: Subtle Apparatuses for Extrasensory Affectiveness, a set of three interactive video installations.[14]
Political Crystals: Algorithmic Strategies for Data Visualization, made with Herbert Rocha, was shown in the SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 Art Gallery.[2] She exhibited again at the SIGGRAPH Asia Art Gallery in 2025.[15]
If You Hold a Stone Hold it in Your Hand (2020), built on World Health Organization data on COVID-19 cases, was presented in the Los Angeles Garden of Ars Electronica 2020.[7] She also took part in Performing New Infrastructures, part of Ars Electronica's New Digital Deal program.[16]
She was a fellow of the TTT Fellows Art and Science Residency II, where she worked with the artist Robert Lisek.[17] She has shown work and taught workshops at FILE in São Paulo.[4]

[edit]Ribeiro is on the editorial board of Technoetic Arts: A Journal of Speculative Research, published by Intellect Books.[18] She has reviewed for the journal Leonardo and the Leonardo Abstracts Service peer review panel,[9] and has chaired the Leonardo/ISAST LASER Talks in Brazil.[3][19] She has served on the Council of Readers of the College Art Association.[20]
