Chrysostomos Nasis (Greek: Χρυσόστομος Νάσης; secular name Georgios Nasis; born 30 January 1975) is a bishop in the Church of Greece. He has served as Metropolitan of Tricca, Gardiki and Pyli since 2015.
Early life and education
[edit]Georgios Nasis was born on 30 January 1975, in Patras, Greece, to Evangelos and Vasiliki Nasis. He grew up with two brothers.[1] After completing secondary education in the Thesprotiko region of Preveza,[2] he undertook theological studies at the Higher Ecclesiastical Academy of Thessaloniki, and additionally obtaining English-language proficiency through the Theological School of Aristotle University.[2]
Clerical life
[edit]On 18 October 1999, Georgios was tonsured a monastic,[3] taking the name Chrysostomos. On the same day, he ordained a Deacon at the Holy Monastery of St. Theodora in Thessaloniki by Metropolitan Ioannis of Lagkada, Liti and Rentini (who was an Archimandrite and abbot of the Monastery at the time).[2] A year later, on 5 October 2000, Chrysostomos was ordained a Priest by Metropolitan Panteleimon II of Thessaloniki, granted the office of Archimandrite on the same day.[2][3]
From 2000 to 2014, Archimandrite Chrysostomos served as Rector of Church of St. Marina in Upper Toumba (Thessaloniki).[3] During this time, he also worked as Secretary and Financial Director of the Metropolis of Thessaloniki, and Director of the Saint Anthony Theological Boarding School.[2][4] During this time, he grew particularly close as a spiritual child of the late Metropolitan Anthimos of Thessaloniki.[4]
In 2014, Archimandrite Chrysostomos was transferred to the Metropolis of Tricca, Gardiki and Pyli, serving as Protosyncellus under the leadership of the late Metropolitan Alexios.[4] Since his appointment in this role, Chrysostomos has written several theological articles, and participated in various theological conventions.[2]
Episcopal ministry
[edit]After the retirement of Metropolitan Alexios in 2015,[5] the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece met in a regular convention to elect a successor. Archimandrite Chrysostomos was successfully elected[2] with 49 votes out of 79 voters, against 45 votes for Archimandrite Grigorios Constantinou, and 6 votes for Archimandrite Eirinaios Kalogirou.[6]
He was ordained to the Episcopate the following day, on 11 October 2015,[2] at a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy presided by Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens, held at the Cathedral of Saint Dionysios the Areopagite.[1] Thirty hierarchs from various Orthodox jurisdictions concelebrated at the ordination, including from across the Metropolises of the Church of Greece, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Patriarchate of Alexandria, and the Church of Albania.[3]
On 12 October 2015, Chrysostomos was formally enthroned as Metropolitan of Tricca, Gardiki and Pyli.[7]
Metropolitan Chrysostomos currently oversees the publishing and distribution of the diocesan periodical "Saint Vissarion," as well as managing parish youth groups, a Metropolis blood bank, Byzantine Music School, boarding schools, aged care homes, and an Ecclesiastical Art Museum.[8]
