Christian Alexander Cerda (born December 27, 2002) is an American professional baseball catcher in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, currently assigned to the Triple-A Reno Aces.
Early life
[edit]Cerda grew up in the Bronx, New York, born to Dominican parents. At 13, he left for San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, to chase a professional baseball career.[1] There he came under the wing of instructor Astín Jacobo, who had noticed him in the La Javilla amateur league and brought him to the island — converting him from third base to catcher in the process.[1] His older brother Allan, a former Cincinnati Reds prospect, had taken the same route years earlier.[2]
"Baseball over there is harder than most countries or most states," Cerda said of his time in the Dominican Republic. "So I just went the harder route, and eventually it paid off."[2]
Professional career
[edit]Tampa Bay Rays (2019–2022)
[edit]Cerda signed with the Tampa Bay Rays as an international free agent on July 2, 2019, for a bonus of $325,000.[3] His first professional season came in 2021 — he had missed 2020 when the minor league schedule was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic — with DSL Rays1 in the Dominican Summer League, batting .218 with 25 RBI in 42 games.[4] In 2022, he split time between two Rookie-level affiliates after the mid-season trade, posting a combined .273/.420/.432 slash line.[4]
On July 30, 2022, Tampa Bay sent Cerda to the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of the deal that brought outfielder David Peralta to the Rays.[5]
Arizona Diamondbacks (2022–present)
[edit]Cerda opened the 2023 season at Single-A with the Visalia Rawhide and earned a mid-year promotion to High-A with the Hillsboro Hops. Over 108 games he batted .247/.402/.397 with 11 home runs and 53 RBI, drawing 93 walks — a figure that Baseball America cited as evidence of his advanced plate discipline for a catcher his age.[6] He was named to the Arizona Diamondbacks Organization All-Star team that year.[5] That winter he played for the Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League, taken in the second round of the novice draft.[1]
In 2024, Cerda batted .243/.364/.332 overall at Hillsboro.[4] Baseball America ranked him the No. 27 prospect in the Diamondbacks organization, describing him as a defense-first catcher whose patient approach at the plate set him apart.[6] He moved up to Double-A with the Amarillo Sod Poodles in August 2024 and was named Northwest League Player of the Week for the period ending August 4, 2024.[5]
Cerda discussed his bilingualism as a catcher with NewsChannel 10 in 2025: "I speak both languages and it's pretty easy for me because I'm a catcher, so we got Dominican pitchers and American pitchers so I can translate if I need to."[2]
The Diamondbacks invited him to spring training in January 2025 as a non-roster participant.[5] He put up 18 home runs for Amarillo during the 2025 season before injuries cut his year short.[2] On April 18, 2026, the organization promoted him to Triple-A, assigning him to the Reno Aces.[7]
