Checkin is a Norwegian event management and payment platform company headquartered in Kristiansand, Norway, with an office in Copenhagen, Denmark, and a further employee based in Stockholm, Sweden.[1] The company provides a platform for event registration, ticket sales, payment processing, and accounting automation, used by organizers of conferences, courses, and other large-scale events across Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.[2]

History

Checkin's own company timeline states it was founded in 2008 by Kristian Løining, who was volunteering with an organization at the time and identified the need for a registration system to bring order to its finances; this account is repeated consistently in the company's public communications, including two separate news articles in the Norwegian outlet Shifter.[3][4] However, Norway's Central Coordinating Register of Legal Entities (Enhetsregisteret) records the legal entity's incorporation date (stiftelsesdato) as 13 April 2009, registered 12 May 2009 under the name Stevne-Nett AS; it adopted its current name, Checkin AS, on 1 December 2009.[5] Løining worked as a teacher until 2012, when growing word-of-mouth demand for the system led him to leave teaching and work on the company full-time.[6]

Roy Mersland, a professor, joined as external chairman in 2016 and served in that role for ten years.[7] In January 2026, Eivind Gundersen — a former director at Visma with more than 20 years of leadership experience there, and the principal of the investment vehicle EG Invest — took over as chairman, with Mersland continuing as an ordinary board member and a significant shareholder.[8] Checkin's own current governance page confirms Gundersen as Chairman of the Board and Mersland as an ordinary board member, alongside André Berg Edvardsen, Andreas Eskeland, Kristian Løining, Kjell Ingvar Torvik, and Karoline Drange.[9] The company scaled its sales operations from 2017 under Kjell Ingvar Torvik.[10]

The company raised approximately 15 million NOK from Skagerak Capital in 2020–2021;[11] Skagerak's own portfolio page separately lists Checkin among its active investments and records the investment as occurring in 2021.[12] In January 2026, Checkin raised a further NOK 10 million or more in a directed share issue, with Gundersen personally contributing NOK 10 million through EG Invest; the company said the funds would go toward internationalization and Nordic expansion, and declined to disclose the total round size or the company's valuation.[13]

Checkin AS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Checkin Holding AS.[14] As of April 2026, Checkin's own reporting lists Checkin Holding AS's shareholders as Løining Holding AS (32.19%), Mersland AS (14.61%), Skagerak Capital (14.38%), EG Invest AS (12.52%), Melesio Capital AS (6.46%), Torvik Consulting (6.38%), Agder Seed AS (4.47%), Stavik Holding AS (2.68%), and remaining shareholders (6.34%).[15] Checkin AS's registered share capital is 203,951.10 NOK across 367,112 shares, following a change recorded on 7 February 2022.[16] In 2022, the company rebranded around the tagline "The accountant's choice," emphasizing its accounting automation features, and moved into larger premises.[17]

Checkin was approved as a payment institution by Finanstilsynet (the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway) in 2024, and launched its payment subsidiary CheckinPay in connection with that approval.[18] CheckinPay AS was incorporated on 14 April 2023 and registered in the Enhetsregisteret on 29 August 2023.[19]

Between 2024 and 2025, Checkin expanded into the Swedish and Danish markets.[20] In mid-2025, Christian Stavik — previously Technology Director (CTO) at the education company Noroff for almost five years, and before that with roughly 20 years of leadership experience at media companies including Fædrelandsvennen and Berlingske Media — was appointed CEO; Løining, who had led the company for 15 years, moved into a role focused on developing the company's payment product, CheckinPay.[21][22] The leadership change was also reported independently by kom24.[23] As part of its Nordic expansion, Checkin established an international commercial office in Copenhagen, which had three employees as of January 2026, alongside one employee based in Stockholm; the company said it had already secured its first customers in Denmark and Sweden and formed partnerships with several Danish organizations.[24]

In June 2026, Checkin launched a server implementing the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard developed by Anthropic that lets AI assistants connect directly to external systems and retrieve data in real time.[25][26] The server gives AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT access to an organizer's event, attendee, and payment data, with access authenticated per request, personal data masked by default, and all requests logged for audit purposes.[27] Checkin's listing is discoverable through Anthropic's own Claude directory[28] and OpenAI's ChatGPT plugin/app store.[29] Checkin states it was among the first event management platforms to offer this capability.[30]

Checkin reported revenue of NOK 46 million for 2025.[31] Employee counts vary by source and date: Brønnøysundregistrene records 26 employees at Checkin AS (as of 10 August 2026) and 7 at CheckinPay AS (as of 10 November 2025), for a combined register figure of 33;[32] Shifter separately reported 36 employees as of 13 January 2026;[33] and the company has separately stated a combined figure of approximately 38.[note 1]

Products and services

Checkin's core product is an event registration platform that lets organizers create events, sell tickets, and manage participant sign-ups, with support for white-label registration pages hosted on an organizer's own domain.[34] According to its articles of association, Checkin AS's registered primary purpose is to provide complete event-registration services — including registration and banking services, customer-register management, direct debit, e-commerce, and booking services — with server operation, website hosting, web development, hardware/software sales, and photo/video production as secondary purposes.[35]

CheckinPay, the company's payment subsidiary, was approved as a payment institution by Finanstilsynet in 2024[36] and operates under the European PSD2 directive; it is PCI DSS-certified. It handles payment processing, invoicing, and refunds for events booked through the platform, and supports regional payment methods including Vipps, Swish, and MobilePay alongside card payments and electronic invoicing.[37] CheckinPay AS was incorporated on 14 April 2023 and registered in the Enhetsregisteret on 29 August 2023, with a registered purpose of providing payment services under Norway's Financial Undertakings Act.[38] Checkin uses a success-based pricing model, charging per ticket sold rather than a monthly subscription fee.

The platform also includes an integrated CRM module and an on-site check-in application for scanning tickets and tracking attendance at events.[39]

Market

Checkin operates in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, with its platform and payment methods adapted to each market. The company states it serves more than 4,000 customer organizations, including associations, businesses, trade federations, and municipalities, ranging from small seminars to conferences with more than 10,000 attendees.[40] Customers whose use of the platform has been described in case studies published by Checkin include Oslo Business Forum, the volunteer network ODA-Nettverk, and the destination organization Region Stavanger.[41]

Nordic Event Pulse

In 2026, Checkin published Nordic Event Pulse 2026, which it describes as its first industry report on the Nordic events sector and, according to the company, the largest event-industry report produced for the Nordic region.[42] The 52-page report combines survey responses from 108 event organizers, marketing managers, and business leaders in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark with transaction data drawn from more than 1.19 million tickets sold through the Checkin platform.[43]

Among the report's findings: 55% of surveyed organizers expected their event budgets to grow over the following year, and of those who changed ticket prices in 2026, 65% raised them, which the report attributes mainly to rising costs rather than strategic pricing.[44] The report also points to late ticket-buying as a consistent pattern, citing Checkin's own platform data showing 69% of tickets were purchased in the final four weeks before an event, including 17% bought the same day.[45] Other sections cover organizers' marketing and pricing priorities, attendee acquisition and cost management as top-ranked challenges, and attitudes toward AI, with 55% of respondents agreeing that AI would change how they plan and market events.[46]
