Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is an upcoming animated musical fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, inspired by the book from Roald Dahl. The film stars Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka, alongside Kit Connor, Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet, and Helena Bonham Carter.
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is scheduled to be released theatrically on November 5, 2027, before releasing on Netflix on December 22.
Premise
[edit]In a modern twist on the book, Wonka (Waititi) returns to the factory after being under arrest for turning a child into a blueberry during the Golden Ticket contest, as Charlie Paley (Connor) plans a heist to steal the priceless chocolate bar from the candy maker with a new generation of kids in order to save their homes from eviction.

Production
[edit]On March 5, 2020, Netflix announced that director Taika Waititi would direct two animated series based on Roald Dahl's 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a series inspired by the Oompa-Loompas, in partnership with The Roald Dahl Story Company.[1] By April 2026, it was announced that an animated film with Waititi starring as Willy Wonka was being developed at Netflix Animation Studios with Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan directing while Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo are producing the adaptation. Kit Connor also joins the cast as this film's version of Charlie, setting in the modern age.[2] In August 2026, Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet, and Helena Bonham Carter joined the cast.[3]

Marketing
[edit]On May 19, 2026, during License Expo in Las Vegas, Netflix announced a partnership with Ferrero Group to handle a new incarnation of the Wonka brand featuring a range of products such as chocolates, sugar confectionaries, ice creams (Blue Bunny Ice Cream), cereals (Kellogg's) among others with the line being available in the US with select products available in Europe.[4]
Mechandise
[edit]That same day, Netflix appointed Moose Toys as its global master toy licensee alongside the Netflix series, Young MacDonald.[4]
