Chad Kempel (born 1981) is an American amateur runner and father of quintuplets from Eagle, Idaho, who holds four Guinness World Records for the fastest marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 1 kilometer while pushing a quintuple pram.[4][5] His family first attracted national attention in 2018 following the birth of their quintuplets and the viral spread of videos documenting devices Kempel built to care for five infants simultaneously.[6][7]

Personal life

Kempel married his wife, Amy, in 2007.[3] The couple had two daughters, Savannah and Avery, before conceiving quintuplets through intrauterine insemination.[6] On May 2, 2013, the couple had twin sons, Marshall and Spencer, who were born prematurely at 22 weeks and three days and died within hours of birth.[6][8][1][9][3]

During the pregnancy, the Kempels sought to have the quintuplets delivered by John Elliott, an Arizona physician specializing in high-order multiple births, but their health plan, Kaiser Permanente, denied the out-of-network request, saying it had the experience and resources to provide the care. The couple appealed to California's Department of Managed Health Care, to the governor and local lawmakers, and to the president, without success.[1][8] The quintuplets, three boys and two girls named Lincoln, Noelle, Grayson, Preston, and Gabriella, were born by caesarean section on January 11, 2018, at 27 weeks and 3 days' gestation, each weighing under three pounds.[6][10] The quintuplets were delivered at Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek Medical Center and spent 73 days in neonatal intensive care before the last two came home in March 2018.[11][12] The family lived in Mountain House, California, at the time of the births,[11] and moved to Eagle, Idaho, in 2019.[13][14][15][16]

After the quintuplets were born, Kempel built devices to manage their care, including a rig allowing all five infants to be bottle-fed at once. Videos of the devices were published by outlets including Inside Edition, Parents, NowThis, and New Zealand's Newshub.[7][17][18][19][20]

Kempel completed a master's degree and taught at San José State University.[3] He works as a data scientist for San Mateo County, California.[3]

Guinness World Records

Kempel has said he was inspired to attempt stroller-pushing records after reading about Ann Marie Cody and Teresa Marie Pitts, who had set Guinness World Records titles pushing their children in triple strollers.[13][4][21][22] Before the record attempts, he had completed multiple marathons, including a personal best of 3:14:25 at the 2013 Newport Marathon in Oregon, as well as an Ironman Triathlon and a 100-mile ultramarathon.[4][21][23]

His first attempt, at the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach on February 3, 2019, finished in about 5 hours and 31 minutes, missing the 4:45:00 cutoff Guinness had set for the new record title. After crossing the finish line, he continued running to complete 27.3 miles in recognition of the 27 weeks and 3 days his wife carried the pregnancy.[2][23] A second attempt, at the Oakland Marathon on March 24, 2019, finished in 4:49:29, about four and a half minutes over the cutoff.[24] On March 31, 2019, Kempel set the record for the fastest marathon pushing a quintuple pram at the Modesto Marathon in California, finishing in 4 hours, 42 minutes, and 49 seconds while pushing his one-year-old quintuplets.[25][5][9] As in Oakland, his brother rode a bicycle alongside him in case the children needed feeding or a diaper change.[26][24] On July 20, 2019, he set the record for the fastest 10 km pushing a quintuple pram, in 1:04:52.9, in Garden City, Idaho.[27][5][9]

At the Oakland Running Festival on March 20, 2022, Kempel added the record for the fastest half marathon pushing a quintuple pram, finishing in an official time of 2:19:55, about 10 minutes under the required cutoff, while pushing approximately 240 pounds of stroller and four-year-old children.[28][29][5][30][31][32] His wife, Amy, rode a bicycle alongside them to help with the children if needed.[5][32] The record attempt was covered by national outlets including NBC's TODAY, Good Morning America, Men's Health, People, Runner's World, and UPI.[33][34][35][3][31][32]

Kempel's fourth record came on July 29, 2023, when he pushed the quintuple pram 1 kilometer in 5 minutes and 34 seconds at Eagle High School, with a combined load of 301 pounds: 234 pounds of children and a 67-pound stroller. Wanting to give his older children a chance to take part, he pushed his two eldest daughters along with three of the quintuplets, while the other two quintuplets cheered from the sideline.[36][4][37]

The five-seat stroller and a sign reading "Anything Is Possible," which the family carried across the record-setting finish lines, are displayed at the Guinness World Records Museum in Copenhagen.[16] Kempel and his family are featured in the Guinness World Records 2025 annual and in Ripley's Believe It or Not! Dare to Discover.[38][39]

In April 2022, Kempel was interviewed live on NBC's TODAY by Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie following his half marathon record.[40] Kempel and his family have appeared on The Doctors[41][42] and he was named "Person of the Week" by ABC World News Tonight in April 2022.[43] The family also appeared on the syndicated talk show Pickler & Ben.[44] In 2022, Kempel appeared as a contestant on the game show You Bet Your Life with Jay Leno; he and his game partner won about $5,000, and his family used part of his winnings to donate toys to a local toy bank.[45]
