ChaariKaandha (Odia: ଚାରିକାନ୍ଧ; lit. 'Four Shoulders') is a 2026 Indian mid-length Odia-language social comedy-drama film written and directed by Biswanath Rath and produced by Atish Kumar Rout under the banner Ritupriya Productions. The film stars Shakti Baral, Satabdi Suryasnata, Susil Mishra, Gourrab Mohanty, Shivani Khara and Pravanjan Mishra.[1]

The film concerns an elderly man living alone who wonders whether four people will be available to carry his body to the cremation ground after his death. It deals with ageing, loneliness, human relationships and changing social conventions.[2]

Before its theatrical release, ChaariKaandha was screened at film festivals in India and abroad. At the 2026 Hokkaido International Film Festival in Japan, it received the Kutchan Award.[2] The film was theatrically released in Odisha on 27 February 2026 [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] and was reported as India's first mid-length film to receive a theatrical release.[10][11]

The film is also reported as the first Odia film to be screened in Belgium.[12][13][14][15]

Release

[edit]

The film was released theatrically in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on 27 February 2026.[11][16] KalaSanskruti reported that the release made ChaariKaandha the first mid-length film in India to be released in cinemas while Yuva Samay also described it as India's first mid-length film to receive a theatrical release in its coverage of the release.[10][11] A premiere screening was held at PVR Cinemas in Bhubaneswar on the day of release.[17]

Reception

[edit]

Pradeep Pattanayak of KalaSanskruti praised the film's direction and performances, describing Biswanath Rath's storytelling as "tight" and his direction as "measured yet moving". He particularly praised the climax and Shakti Baral's portrayal of Baidyanath Mishra, describing Baral's performance as restrained and powerful. Pattanayak also positively assessed the performances of the supporting cast.[18]

The film's theatrical screenings were reported to have received emotional responses from audiences. Pattanayak, who attended the premiere at PVR Cinemas in Bhubaneswar, wrote that he observed many viewers with moist eyes after the screening.[18] Prameya and Pratidin also reported that viewers became emotional during the film,[19][20] while Odia Celebrity reported that several audience members were moved to tears at the Bhubaneswar premiere.[21]

Sakala discussed the film's portrayal of loneliness and changing social relationships and also reported an emotional response from viewers following its screening.[22]

BuzzOdisha, in a profile of Satabdi Suryasnata, highlighted her portrayal of Soni, a cab driver, describing the character as a departure from stereotypical female roles and praising the authenticity of her performance.[23]

Baishnaba Charan Mohanty, reviewing the film for Odisha 365, described ChaariKaandha as a "meaningful and socially relevant Odia film", praising its performances and its treatment of loneliness and ageing.[24]

Festival screenings and accolades

[edit]

According to multiple reports, ChaariKaandha was screened at more than forty national and international film festivals[25][26], including the Jagran Film Festival[27], Ahmedabad International Film Festival[28], Chalachitram National Film Festival, Paridrishya International Festival of Short Films and Documentaries[29], and Hokkaido International Film Festival in Japan[30]. The film also received awards and honours at several festivals.[8]

The Hokkaido International Film Festival jury praised the direction for approaching the protagonist's concerns about death with a light touch within the context of Indian culture and religious beliefs. The jury described the film as heartwarming and thought-provoking, with a substantial message.[2]
