Censinet is an American healthcare cybersecurity and risk management company based in Boston, Massachusetts. The company develops cloud-based software for healthcare organizations to manage third-party vendor risks and enterprise cybersecurity compliance.

History

Censinet was founded in September 2017 by software entrepreneur Ed Gaudet and investor Keith Figlioli of LVRHealth.[1] Prior to founding Censinet, Gaudet served as Chief Marketing Officer (2010–2013) and later General Manager (2013–2017) at Imprivata, where he created Imprivata Cortext, a cloud-based clinical communications platform.[1][2] Earlier in his career, Gaudet was Senior Vice President at Liquid Machines, a data security company later acquired by CheckPoint Software, and held executive roles at IONA Technologies, Rational Software, and SQA, Inc.[1] Gaudet holds multiple patents related to mobile authentication, secure content sharing, and distributed data management.[1] He is a member of the Forbes Technology Council.[1]

Products and services

The company's primary product, Censinet RiskOps, is a cloud-based platform that enables healthcare organizations to conduct vendor risk assessments, manage cybersecurity compliance, and benchmark their security programs against industry peers.[3] The platform connects healthcare delivery organizations with a network of over 30,000 vendors and 50,000 products, enabling organizations to reuse shared assessment data rather than conducting redundant evaluations.[3] It supports compliance mapping to frameworks including NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, the HHS Cybersecurity Performance Goals (HPH CPGs), Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices (HICP), and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.[4]

Additional products include Censinet One, an on-demand risk management service, and Censinet Connect, a tool for healthcare technology vendors to share security documentation with prospective customers.[3]

Research

Censinet has commissioned multiple research studies with the Ponemon Institute examining cybersecurity risks in healthcare. A 2019 study found that third-party risk management costs the healthcare industry $23.7 billion annually, with 56 percent of healthcare organizations having experienced a data breach introduced by third-party vendors.[5]

A 2021 Ponemon study commissioned by Censinet, The Impact of Ransomware on Healthcare During COVID-19 and Beyond, surveyed 597 healthcare IT and security professionals and found that nearly one in four healthcare organizations reported increased patient mortality rates following ransomware attacks.[6][7][8][9] The study also found that 70 percent of respondents reported longer patient stays and delayed procedures resulting from cyberattacks.[6][10][11] The findings drew national coverage from CBS News, which reported on the study alongside a Mandiant report on the FIN12 ransomware group's targeting of healthcare organizations.[8]

A follow-up study commissioned by Censinet and published in January 2023, The Impact of Ransomware on Patient Safety and the Value of Cybersecurity Benchmarking, surveyed 579 healthcare IT and security professionals. It found that 47 percent of organizations had experienced a ransomware attack in the previous two years, up from 43 percent in 2021, and that 45 percent reported complications from medical procedures resulting from such attacks, up from 36 percent in 2021.[12] The study also reported that 46 percent of ransomware incidents were triggered by a third party, up from 36 percent two years earlier, and found that 78 percent of respondents considered cybersecurity peer benchmarking useful for demonstrating program effectiveness.[12]

Healthcare Cybersecurity Benchmarking Study

Since 2023, Censinet has co-led the Healthcare Cybersecurity Benchmarking Study in partnership with KLAS Research, the American Hospital Association (AHA), Health-ISAC, the Health Sector Coordinating Council, and The Scottsdale Institute.[13] The study establishes peer benchmarks based on frameworks including NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, the HHS Cybersecurity Performance Goals (HPH CPGs), Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices (HICP), and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.[4]

The 2025 edition of the study, published in April 2025, included data from 69 healthcare and payer organizations surveyed between September and December 2024.[4] The research examined organizations' coverage of cybersecurity frameworks and analyzed correlations with factors such as cyber insurance premiums and IT security spending.[4] The study found that healthcare organizations continue to take a reactive rather than proactive approach to cybersecurity, with significant gaps in third-party risk management and asset management.[14][15]

KLAS partnership

Censinet partners with KLAS Research on the "Cybersecurity Transparent" designation program, which recognizes healthcare vendors that demonstrate cybersecurity preparedness through risk assessments.[16]

HSCC contributions

Censinet is a member of the Healthcare and Public Health Sector Coordinating Council (HSCC) Cybersecurity Working Group, a coalition of more than 480 healthcare organizations that partners with the U.S. government on cybersecurity guidance for the sector.[17] In April 2026, the working group published the Health Industry Third-Party AI Risk and Supply Chain Transparency Guide, a 109-page document providing healthcare organizations with best practices for managing cybersecurity risks in AI supply chains.[18] Censinet's CEO and founder Ed Gaudet co-led the task group that developed the guide, alongside Samantha Jacques of McLaren Health.[17]

Recognition

In January 2025, the Baldrige Foundation announced that it would present its Award for Leadership Excellence in Cybersecurity to Censinet's CEO and founder Ed Gaudet, in recognition of his work on healthcare cybersecurity risk management.[19] The award was presented at the foundation's Quest for Excellence conference in Baltimore on April 1, 2025.[citation needed]

In September 2025, the company was named to TIME's inaugural World's Top HealthTech Companies list, receiving a "High" performance indicator in the Health Information & Management category.[20]

In 2025, Censinet was recognized as a Representative Vendor in the Gartner Market Guide for Third-Party Risk Management Technology Solutions.[21]
