Carmen Harra is a Romanian singer and author who has also worked as a psychic and spiritual counsellor.[1] She began her music career in Romania under the name Carmen Mureșan and performed with the vocal group Trio Expres.[2] In the United States, she published books about karma, numerology, spirituality, and relationships. Her first book, Everyday Karma, was published by Ballantine Books in 2002 and reviewed by Publishers Weekly and Library Journal.[1][3]
Music career
[edit]Harra was born in Bistrița, Romania. The biographical reference work Contemporary Authors states that she began performing professionally at the age of sixteen and worked as a singer, songwriter, and composer in Romania.[1] In Romania she performed under the name Carmen Mureșan.[2]
Mureșan performed with Trio Expres from 1979. The group recorded Romanian pop and light music, including Romanian-language adaptations of international songs.[2] Its LP Eu am un vis was released by the Romanian record label Electrecord in 1980.[4]
Mureșan released the album 10 through Eurostar in 1991. She later resumed recording under the name Carmen Harra.[2] In 2019, Eurostar released her album Behind Closed Doors – Historia de amor, containing eleven songs in Romanian, English, and Spanish. Music journalist Octavian Ursulescu reported that Harra was credited as a co-writer of the music and lyrics of all eleven songs.[2]
Books and counselling work
[edit]Everyday Karma: A Renowned Psychic Shows You How to Change Your Life by Changing Your Karma was published by Ballantine Books in 2002. It presents Harra's interpretation of karma and a ten-step method intended to help readers identify recurring personal patterns.[1][3]
The book received mixed reviews. Publishers Weekly praised Harra's conversational style and positive tone but criticised the book's reliance on anecdotal evidence and its extended discussion of her predictions.[3] A Library Journal review, summarised in Contemporary Authors, described the book as encouraging while questioning its treatment of the Hindu concept of karma and the limited attention given to relaxation techniques.[1]
Her book Decoding Your Destiny was published by Beyond Words Publishing in 2006.[5] A profile in New York described the numerological method promoted in the book as using a person's date and time of birth together with what Harra called their "vibrational energy".[6]
By the early 2000s, Harra was working in New York City as a psychic and private consultant, describing herself as a "metaphysical intuitive".[1] In 2003, The New York Times published a feature about her work in the fashion industry and the publication of Everyday Karma.[7] Later that year, Women's Wear Daily published a feature about her use of colour symbolism in her consultations.[8] She was also one of several advisers discussed in a 2013 Hollywood Reporter article about psychics consulted by people in the entertainment industry.[9]
