Building The Legend Limited is an English automotive engineering company founded by Neville Swales in 2012 and based in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.[1] The company hand-builds re-creations of the Jaguar XJ13 — a 1966 Le Mans prototype of which only one example was made and which never raced — together with the double-overhead-camshaft V12 engine developed for that car, which it sells as the tera V12.[2][3][4] With the Scottish racing team Ecurie Ecosse and the design consultancy Design Q it also produces the Ecurie Ecosse LM69, and it builds an evolution of the Jaguar E-Type known as the E-Type Re-Imagined.[5][2][6]

The company completed its first XJ13 re-creation in 2016, with the guidance of surviving members of the original Jaguar project team, and it debuted at that year's London Classic Car Show.[7][8] It was a finalist for the International Historic Motoring Awards 2016.[9] In January 2024 an XJ13 built by the company for the American collector Tyler Schilling was featured on the web series Jay Leno's Garage.[10][11]

History

[edit]

In the mid-1960s the Jaguar car company developed the XJ13, a mid-engined racing prototype intended to return the marque to winning ways at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its quad-cam V12 engine was never used in a production car, the project was shelved after a change of priorities following Jaguar's 1966 merger with BMC, and the sole prototype was badly damaged in a 1971 testing crash and later rebuilt.[7][12]

Neville Swales, an engineer who had worked in the brewing industry, began researching the car and its engine around 2010 and founded Building The Legend Limited in October 2012.[2][1] Having located the only complete surviving example of the XJ13's prototype engine — a unit Jaguar had sent to Germany, which he found advertised for sale on eBay — he had its provenance confirmed by Peter Wilson, an engineer who had worked on the original project.[2]

The first XJ13 re-creation, hand-built in aluminium with the guidance of surviving members of the original project team, was completed in 2016. No complete set of original drawings was thought to survive, and the car was created following extensive research, including at the Jaguar Heritage Trust.[7][13] Before its completion it was announced that the re-creations would be offered for sale to the public.[14] The car debuted at the London Classic Car Show in February 2016[8] and was displayed, according to Goodwood Road & Racing, "to widespread acclaim".[7] It was a finalist in the Car of the Year category of the International Historic Motoring Awards 2016.[9]

In July 2019 Building The Legend, the racing team Ecurie Ecosse and the design consultancy Design Q revealed the Ecurie Ecosse LM69, a closed-body evolution of the XJ13 concept built to the Le Mans homologation regulations of 1969, of which 25 examples were planned.:[5][7][15][16] The company launched the tera V12, a hand-built version of the XJ13's quad-cam engine sold as a standalone crate engine, at the Race Retro show on 21 February 2020.[3][12]

In January 2023 Hagerty published an in-depth profile of Swales and the company.[2] That June the E-Type Re-Imagined made its public debut at the London Concours.[6] An XJ13 re-creation built by the company for the American collector Tyler Schilling appeared on Jay Leno's Garage on 22 January 2024; the car is powered by a single-overhead-camshaft V12 rather than the original quad-cam design.[10][11]

XJ13 re-creations

[edit]

Building The Legend hand-builds re-creations of the XJ13, which it calls "toolroom copies" — cars built to the dimensions of the 1966 prototype rather than copies of the rebuilt post-crash car.[4][13] Two of its re-creations are powered by surviving original prototype quad-cam engines, of which five are known to survive.[13]

Ecurie Ecosse LM69

[edit]

The LM69 was announced in July 2019 as a joint venture between Building The Legend, Ecurie Ecosse and Design Q, trading as Ecurie Cars Ltd. It is styled as an evolution of the XJ13 as it might have appeared under the 1969 Le Mans regulations, is powered by a mid-mounted tera V12, and was planned as a series of 25 [17][18][19]

E-Type Re-Imagined and other models

[edit]

The E-Type Re-Imagined, a restomod evolution of the Jaguar E-Type using the company's tera V12, debuted at the 2023 London Concours; around 24 cars are planned, each built to individual customer specification.[6][2] The company also offers a re-creation of the Porsche 550 Spyder built to the original 1953 drawings,[20] and in 2026 introduced Teraluce, a range of front-engined V12 grand tourer re-creations inspired by Italian coachwork of the 1950s and 1960s.[21]

tera V12

[edit]

The tera V12 is a hand-built double-overhead-camshaft 60-degree V12 based on the engine Jaguar designed for the XJ13 and never put into production. First used in the Ecurie Ecosse LM69, it was launched as a standalone engine at Race Retro in February 2020 in 6.1-litre and 6.8-litre forms with a stated output of up to 650 hp (485 kW); the range has since extended from 5.0 to 7.3 litres. The company sells it for installation in classic Jaguars and other vehicles, and uses it in its own cars.[3][12][2]
