Bottomline is a business payments technology company headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Formerly known as Bottomline Technologies, Inc., the company provides business payments, cash management, financial messaging, fraud prevention, and digital banking technology for corporations and financial institutions globally.[1][2][3]
Its customers include banks and other financial institutions, as well as businesses ranging from small and mid-sized companies to large enterprises.[4]
Craig Saks is Bottomline's chief executive officer.[4]
History
[edit]Bottomline was founded in 1989 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and remains headquartered there.[5]
The company expanded through acquisitions including SMA Financial in 2010,[6] Albany Software in 2012,[7][8] Andera in 2014,[9] and fraud-detection provider Intellinx in 2015.[10][11]
In December 2021, private-equity firm Thoma Bravo agreed to acquire Bottomline in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $2.6 billion.[1][2] The acquisition was completed in May 2022, after which Bottomline ceased trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange.[12]
In 2025, Bottomline agreed to sell its Legal Spend Management division, including the Legal-X and Legal eXchange platforms, to Sedgwick.[13]

[edit]Bottomline organizes its products and services around corporate payments and cash flow, banking and connectivity, and risk and compliance.[1][2][3]
Corporate payments and cash flow
[edit]Its Payments Automation products support accounts-payable and payment workflows, including invoice processing, approvals, and domestic and international payments.[14]
Its Paymode business payments network facilitates electronic business-to-business payments between buyers and suppliers.[15][16]
Bottomline's CFO Suite connects treasury forecasting, invoice processing and payments, collections, and cash application through a modular platform for finance teams.[17]
The company also provides treasury and payment management technology used by corporate treasury and finance teams.[18][19]
Banking and connectivity
[edit]Bottomline's Commercial Digital Banking platform provides banks with payment, cash-management, and digital-channel capabilities for business customers.[20]
Its financial messaging business supports domestic and cross-border payment connectivity and services related to ISO 20022 migration and payment messaging infrastructure.[21][22]
Its Payments Connectivity services support secure domestic and cross-border financial messaging between businesses and financial institutions.[23]
Risk and compliance
[edit]Bottomline offers fraud prevention and internal-threat-management software, including tools for monitoring, investigation, and case management.[24]
Across these areas, Bottomline provides digital banking, financial messaging, payment network, and fraud-control capabilities that support payment connectivity.[25]
Ownership
[edit]Bottomline has been owned by Thoma Bravo since the acquisition was completed in 2022.[12]
