He served as Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, Vice President for External Relations and Resource Development, and Executive Vice President and Director General of the Technion.

Golany's research focuses on production and operations management, resource allocation, efficiency and effectiveness analysis and other related fields.

Early life and education

[edit]

Golany was born in Tiberias. The family later settled in Haifa. He studied at Hareali High School and served in the IDF's Armor Corps.

Golany received a B.Sc. (Cum Laude) from the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management of the Technion (later renamed the Faculty of Data and Decision Sciences) in 1982. He received a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin in 1985.

Golany authored the thesis On Chance Constrained, Competitive and Cooperative Evaluational Methods in Some Problems of Dynamic Management under the supervision of Prof. Abraham Charnes.

Academic career

[edit]

Golany joined the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management of the Technion in 1986. He became a full professor in 2004 and holder of the Samuel Gorney Chair in Engineering in 2005.

Golany held several leadership positions at the Technion, including Dean of the Industrial Engineering and Management Faculty (2006-2011), Vice President for External Relations & Resource Development (2012-2019) and Executive Vice President and Director General (2019-2022).

Golany was also a Senior Research Fellow at the IC2 Institute of the University of Texas at Austin and a Senior Fellow at the Center for Management of Operations and Logistics at the same university.[1]

In 2024, he retired as an emeritus professor. In the same year, he also became a Senior Research Fellow at the Samuel Neaman Institute at the Technion. Over the course of his career, Golany has mentored more than 40 M.Sc., Ph.D, and postdoctoral students and researchers.[2]

Research

[edit]

Golany's publications focus on Industrial Engineering, Operations Research and Management Science. His later research also addressed issues in counterterrorism and Homeland security.

Golany has published over 150 articles in scientific journals and 15 book chapters. He also co-edited a book and authored two patents. He has served as an associate editor of Operations Research, OMEGA – The International Journal of Management Science and the Journal of Productivity Analysis.
