Bizay, stylized in all caps, BIZAY is a Portuguese e-commerce company with headquarters in the Lisbon region that sells customized printed and promotional products through an online platform, targeting small and medium-sized businesses.[1] Registered as Bizay, SA, the company has grown from a domestic printing startup into a multi-market operation serving Europe, North America and the rest of the world.[2]
History
[edit]The company was founded in Portugal in 2013, initially as 360imprimir and building its early customer base in Portugal, Spain, Brazil and Mexico.[3] The company international presence grew even further after a Series B round in May 2019 which gave the company resources to expand to United States, Canada, and fifteen European countries, adopting the Bizay name for those markets while retaining 360imprimir at home.[2] By 2023, the company was operating with 3 different brands: 360imprimir remained active in Portugal, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil. Most other international markets traded as Bizay while American customers encountered a third brand, 360onlineprint.[4]
Business model
[edit]Bizay does not own or operate manufacturing facilities. Its web-to-print platform allows customers to design and order customized products online, with software aggregating those orders and producing the combined volume via industrial manufacturing partners: a batching approach that, according to TechCrunch, makes smaller individual jobs economically viable by creating larger runs.[1] By 2019, the platform was handling around 4,000 orders a day, according to EU-Startups [2], but no public updated figures exists about current production volumes.
Funding
[edit]Various funding round were put in place along the company growth. LeadX Capital Partners led Bizay's €18 million Series B in May 2019, joined by Omnes Capital, Pathena, and a state-backed fund partly financed by the European Union.[2][3] A considerably larger round followed in December 2020 with a €32 million Series C, co-led by Indico Capital Partners and the European Investment Bank, with Iberis Capital and other existing investors also participating in the round. Iberian Lawyer described it as the largest venture capital transaction in Portugal that year.[1][5]
A further €18 million arrived in December 2023 through a Series C2 round, with the aim of product development and expanding operations in the United States market.[4]
Recognition
[edit]Bizay collected recognition for its evolution along the years. It appeared in the Financial Times FT1000 ranking of Europe's fastest-growing companies in 2020.[6] Three years later, the company's founders were selected as Endeavor Entrepreneurs by Endeavor, the international organisation that identifies and supports high-growth entrepreneurs.[7]
Four-day working week
[edit]Bizay began experimenting with a four-day week in October 2022, cutting weekly hours from 40 to 36 on a voluntary basis and without reducing salaries.[8][9] The initiative was quite successfull with the staff. After three months, 98 per cent of the roughly 200-person workforce had opted in, job applications had tripled, and staff turnover had fallen 36 per cent compared to previous year. Absenteeism rose 16 per cent over the same period, however.[10][11]
After a full year, turnover had declined by more than 40 per cent and applications had grown eightfold against the prior year, while productivity per hour remained stable, according to information made public by the company.[12] The company later decided to extend the arrangement to a permanent option for the company's corporate staff.[10]
