BitRaser is a data sanitization and diagnostic software developed by Stellar Information Technology Private Limited, an Indian IT company headquartered in Gurugram. Released in 2016, the brand provides software solutions for permanent data erasure, hardware diagnostics, and erasure verification. The software is designed to help organizations securely decommission IT assets and comply with global data protection regulations such as EU-GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS by ensuring that data is removed permanently using global data wiping standards such as NIST 800-88, and IEEE 2883:2022.[1]

History

[edit]

BitRaser was launched as a specialized sub-brand of Stellar, which has operated in the data recovery and data care industry since 1993. The software was introduced to address the need for secure data sanitization in compliance-driven environments. While the BitRaser web presence began in 2014, the software was officially certified and tested for its data wiping efficacy in 2016. The first version of the commercially available software was tested in India by STQC, Ministry of Information Technology, India. In 2020, BitRaser Drive Eraser achieved Common Criteria (EAL2) certification, marking a significant milestone in its recognition by international security bodies.[1]

Data Erasure

[edit]
  • BitRaser Drive Eraser: A software for permanent data removal from Hard Disk Drives HDDs, Solid State Drives (SSDs), and NVMe drives in PCs, laptops, Macs, Chromebooks, and Servers. It supports bulk erasure over networks via PXE boot.[2]
  • BitRaser Mobile Eraser & Diagnostics: Designed for erasing and testing iOS and Android devices, it enables mobile retailers and second-hand operators to process large volumes of used devices simultaneously. It accurately & efficiently tests key components such as the battery, camera, and GPS, helping streamline high-throughput operations.
  • BitRaser File Eraser: A software for wiping specific files, folders, and internet traces on active systems without affecting the operating system like Windows or Mac. It helps organizations maintain information privacy or data privacy compliance throughout the active device lifecycle.[3]

Diagnostics and Verification

[edit]
  • Hardware Diagnostics: Integrated tools that test the health and functionality of various components (CPU, RAM, storage, etc.) of a device before or after erasure.
  • Drive Verifier: A tool used to validate that an erasure process was successful and that no data remains on the media, supporting third-party audit requirements. The software helps to counter data remanence.[4]

Technology and Standards

[edit]

The software supports upto 26 data erasure methods aligned with recognized data sanitization guidelines, including:

The software generates tamper-proof erasure certificates and detailed audit reports that are stored in a centralized cloud console, providing a verifiable audit trail for regulatory compliance.[5]

Certifications and testing

[edit]

BitRaser has undergone evaluation by several independent third-party organizations:
