Draft:Biju John
Fr. Dr.Biju John is a Catholic priest, researcher and author whose academic work has focused on semantic computing, artificial intelligence and intelligent information systems. His research has examined the use of semantic relationships and intelligent computational methods to improve information search, discovery and retrieval. He has also written on artificial intelligence, robotics, technology, Christianity and contemporary society.
John serves in the RC Archdiocese of Southwark, London.
Academic research
John completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Kingston University, London, in 2011. His doctoral thesis, A Framework for Semantic Information Search and Discovery in Enterprise E-Commerce Applications, investigated the development of a framework for semantic information search and discovery.
The research proposed a semantic architecture incorporating an intelligent network-based engine. The framework supported semantic grouping, storage, retrieval and ranking of information and included automated semantic grouping and retrieval. It was evaluated through an e-commerce case study, with the results expressing applications in semantic search and the ranking of products.
Although the research was applied in an e-commerce environment, the thesis described the information-search approach as generic, making it applicable to other online applications and websites. The research therefore addressed a broader problem in intelligent information systems: how meaningful relationships between information can be established and used to improve information search and discovery.
Publications in semantic computing
John subsequently published research on semantic computing, Intelligent systems and Semantic Web applications.
In 2009, he co-authored “Accelerating User Satisfaction in Semantic E-commerce,” published through IEEE. The paper examined semantic relationships and their relevance to user satisfaction in e-commerce environments. The publication appeared in the Second International Conference on Applications of Digital Information and Web Technologies.
In 2010, John co-authored “Software Metrics for the Evaluation of Semantic Web Applications,” published in the Journal of Algorithms & Computational Technology. The study proposed a parameter matrix for evaluating Semantic Web applications and reported an evaluation of websites using the proposed parameters.
In 2012, he co-authored “Semantic Products Analysis of E-Commerce Websites,” continuing the application of semantic analysis to products and information presented through e-commerce websites.
These publications form a continuing body of work around semantic information, intelligent information systems and the application of semantic technologies to online environments.
Artificial intelligence and technology
John's early academic research investigated intelligent computational approaches to information search and discovery. His doctoral framework used an intelligent network-based engine to establish semantic relationships between information and was designed as a generic approach rather than being restricted to a particular website or e-commerce application.
His later writing has addressed the wider development of artificial intelligence and robotics and their implications for contemporary life.
Books
John is the author of Living With AI and Robotics, published by Dominus Media. The book considers the increasing presence of artificial intelligence and robotics in everyday life and discusses associated opportunities and challenges. John is also the author of Pope Leo XIV, Amor Sed Amor, Love but Love, published by Dominus Media.
Catholic ministry John is a Catholic priest serving in the Archdiocese of Southwark.
His ministry has included engagement with questions concerning Christian life, human dignity, migration, community and contemporary social issues.
Technology and human dignity
John's academic background in artificial intelligence and information systems has informed his later writing and public engagement with questions concerning technology, human dignity, ethics and society.
His work considers artificial intelligence not only as a technological development but also in relation to its effects on human life and society. This provides a connection between his earlier research into intelligent information systems and his later interest in the wider social and ethical implications of emerging technologies.
