Draft:Beshilton HaKofrim

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beshilton HaKofrim (Hebrew: בשלטון הכופרים; lit. In the Rule of Heretics) is the anthem of the Jewish anti-Zionist organization Neturei Karta. The song was written by Rabbi Eliyahu Nachum Parush, a leading figure in the organization. The first stanza in the poem declares acceptance of the Shema Prayer, and the second stanza declares the non-recognition of the Zionist state of Israel.

The song became popular outside of the Haredi Jewish sector after the Jerusalem Faction sang it, and changed the sentence "ובחוקותיהם אין אנו מתחשבים" (And their laws we do not honor) to "ובלשכותיהם אין אנו מתייצבים" (And in their recruitment offices we do not enlist), supporting exemption from military service in Israel and anti-conscription protests.

History

[edit]

According to one version, the original lyrics of the anthem were composed by Rabbi Eliyahu Nachum Parush, Chairman of the Edah HaCharedit, and the Rabbi Abraham Chaim Roth added several stanzas and made minor alterations. Neturei Karta leaflets state that the original melody was ancient Vizhnitz Nigun. However, the brothers Berish and Yitzhak Turnheim composed the current melody while eating a meal at the Russian Compound detention center.[1] Haredi journalist Israel Galis claimed that the poem was written by Rabbi Aaron Katzenlenbogen, leader of the Torah VeYirah community, and the melody was composed by Hasidic Rabbi Meir Shapiro, before the establishment of the state of Israel.[2]

Lyrics

[edit]

Hashem is our King and to him we are servants,
The Torah is our law and unto it we are believers

Hashem is our King and to him we are servants,
The Holy Torah is our life and unto it we serve

To the Rule of the heretics we are not believers,
We are not believers!

And their laws we do not honor,
we do not honor!

In the way of the Torah we walk,
through fire and water.
In the way of the Torah we walk, to sanctify the Holy Name.
Oy! To sanctify the Holy Name!
