Benjamin Seara Da Cunha (born 4 February 1993) is a French-Portuguese professional boxer. He was born in Mantes-la-Jolie, in the Yvelines department of France.
Professional career
[edit]Benjamin Seara Da Cunha grew up between Portugal – in Fiscal (Amares), in the district of Braga – and Mantes-la-Jolie in France, where he took up boxing in 2010.[1]
In 2016, Da Cunha turned professional with the BAM l'Héritage club, competing at light welterweight. After a very difficult start to his career – three losses in as many fights, all by split decision – he left France.[2]
In March 2018 he settled in Azusa, east of Los Angeles, California, training under coach Daniel Valverde. He also changed divisions, moving to lightweight. He made his United States debut on a boxing card staged by the promotional company Golden Boy in Indio, California. He lost his fourth fight by decision to Raymond Muratalla, who would go on to become IBF world champion.[3][4][5]
In October 2018 he arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, where he trained under the guidance of former world champion Raúl Pérez and fought a string of bouts against local boxers.[6]
On 30 November 2018, he won his first fight by first-round knockout (KO). He followed it with another win on 7 December 2018 and a third on 14 December 2019 – three fights and three wins inside the distance in three weeks. On 13 March 2021, after a year and a half out of the ring following an injury to his right hand, Benjamin Da Cunha returned with a third-round KO win over the Mexican Aramis Solis (25 fights, 14 wins, 9 by KO).[7] On 11 December 2021, he beat Jose Zazueta Valdez (23 fights, 6 wins, 4 by KO) by unanimous decision.[8] On 21 May 2022, his winning streak came to an end with a loss to Ricardo Tellez.
Four years after his last fight, Benjamin Da Cunha returned to the ring in Santa Marta, Colombia, where he faced the former WBC Fecarbox champion José Luis Prieto (45 fights, 28 wins, 18 by KO). He won when the referee stopped the fight (TKO) in the sixth round. The bout was marred by a foul, however: Da Cunha kicked his opponent while he was down, an act that earned him a suspension from the Colombian boxing commission.[9][10][11][12]
His professional record stands at twelve fights, with seven wins – six of them inside the distance – and five losses.[13]
