Benetas is an Australian not-for-profit organisation based in Victoria. Founded in 1948, Benetas offers a range of services to help older Victorians, including residential aged care, home care, respite services, and retirement living.[1][2] The organisation serves more than 15,000 clients and employs more than 2,000 staff.[1][3]

History

Benetas was established in 1948 when a small group of volunteers from the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne responded to an urgent need to provide care and support to older Victorians.[1][3] Reflecting its Anglican heritage and commitment to social justice, the organisation operates on a social dividend model, reinvesting any surplus revenue into services, research, and advocacy rather than distributing it as profit.[1] While its faith heritage informs its values, Benetas states its services are open to all older Victorians regardless of background.[1]

Services

Benetas provides a continuum of care across Melbourne and regional Victoria, covering home care, residential aged care, respite, and retirement living.[4]

Home Care

Benetas supports older Victorians to live independently at home through services funded under the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), the Support at Home Program, and the Department of Veterans' Affairs Veterans' Home Care program, as well as private self-funded arrangements.[5][6] Services include personal care, in-home nursing, allied health, meal delivery, transport, and home modifications, among others.[5] Benetas is also a verified provider on the Australian Government's My Aged Care platform.[7][8]

Residential Aged Care

Benetas operates 13 residential aged care homes across Victoria, including in Altona Meadows, Brunswick West, Camberwell, Clarinda, Glenroy, Heidelberg, Roxburgh Park, Frankston, Gisborne, Mornington, Traralgon, California Gully, and Kangaroo Flat.[9][10]

Benetas provides personalised residential aged care by taking the time to understand each resident's individual needs and preferences. Care is tailored to support residents' wellbeing, while a broad range of lifestyle programs encourages continued participation in hobbies, interests, and social activities.

Residents are provided with healthy, nutritious meals, and feedback is encouraged to help inform menu planning and meal options. Clinical care is delivered by qualified nurses who are available 24 hours a day to meet residents' ongoing healthcare needs.

The organisation also maintains an open visiting policy, welcoming family members and friends to visit residents and support ongoing social connections[9].

Respite Services

Benetas provides in-home respite, day centre respite, social support groups, and residential respite across Victoria, providing day and overnight support.[7] The service is designed to support both carers taking a break and care recipients seeking social engagement.[7]

Retirement Living

Benetas manages six retirement living communities across Victoria: St Johns Rise (Mooroolbark), Bridgewater Lake Retirement Estate (Roxburgh Park), The Oaks Retirement Community (Croydon), Dalkeith Heights (Traralgon), Eastwood Retirement (Bairnsdale), and St Laurence Court Community (California Gully).[8]

Acquisitions and Expansion

Benetas has pursued geographic expansion through a series of acquisitions in the early-to-mid 2020s, growing its retirement living and residential aged care portfolio across Victoria.

Bridgewater Lake Retirement Estate (2022)

Benetas acquired the approximately 200-resident Bridgewater Lake Retirement Estate in Roxburgh Park from family-run operator Parks Villages, with ownership transferring on 1 April 2022.[11][12]

Bridgewater Lake Residential Aged Care (2025)

In August 2025, Benetas acquired Moran Roxburgh Park, a residential aged care home co-located with Bridgewater Lake Retirement Estate from Moran Health Care Group. The home was renamed Benetas Bridgewater Lake Residential Aged Care .[13][14]

Keyton Sherwin Rise, Wollert (2025)

In October 2025, Benetas purchased an aged care development site within Keyton's Sherwin Rise retirement village in Wollert, approximately 25 kilometres north of Melbourne's CBD, with plans to build and operate a new care home on the site.[15][12]

The Oaks Retirement Community, Croydon (2025)

In December 2025, Benetas purchased the boutique 26-unit The Oaks Retirement Community in Croydon from Australian Unity, expanding its footprint in Melbourne's outer east.[16][17]

Eastwood Retirement Village, Bairnsdale (2026)

In February 2026, Benetas entered into an agreement to purchase the fully occupied 158-unit Eastwood Retirement Village in Bairnsdale, East Gippsland, marking the organisation's first presence in that region. Settlement was expected on or around 1 April 2026.[18][19]

Research and Advocacy

Benetas maintains a research and advocacy agenda, and has funded and published works on social isolation, consumer engagement, good ageing, end-of-life experience, and aged care reform.[1][20] The organisation also leads the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing, a federally funded program supporting the sector to deliver inclusive care to older Australians from diverse backgrounds.[1]
