Draft:Ben Cable Draft

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ben Cable, also known as Benjamin Cable-McCarthy, is an American actor, author, filmmaker, and marriage equality activist. In 1993, Cable-McCarthy and his partner, Marcial McCarthy, brought a legal challenge after the Los Angeles County Clerk's Office refused to accept their application for a marriage license.[1] He later pursued acting and wrote the children's books Mrs. Fuzzy and The Adventures of Mrs. Fuzzy and the young adult mystery novel Sophie.[citation needed]

Marriage equality advocacy

[edit]

Cable-McCarthy and Marcial McCarthy held a church wedding ceremony in 1991. They subsequently used the surname Cable-McCarthy.[1]

In February 1993, the couple attempted to apply for a marriage license through the Los Angeles County Clerk's Office. The application was refused because California did not recognize marriages between two people of the same sex.[1]

The couple filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County Clerk James H. Dempsey in April 1993, seeking an order requiring the clerk to issue the license. Their attorney, Paul S. Marchand, and Lambda Legal attorney Evan Wolfson described the action as the first test of California law concerning marriage between same-sex partners.[1]

Cable-McCarthy told the Los Angeles Times that the couple sought the legal benefits and recognition available to married heterosexual couples. He said that they intended the case to benefit other same-sex couples as well as themselves.[1]

In 1993, Cable-McCarthy also appeared in C-SPAN programming connected with the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. He spoke at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., about marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.[2]

The California Court of Appeal rejected the couple's petition, and the California Supreme Court declined to review the case.[1]

Acting and filmmaking

[edit]

Cable works primarily in independent films, short films, and music videos. His acting credits include Rearview Mirror, Everything I Could, Don't Be Afraid, Revelations, The Gospel According to Ruth, Jovi & Lou, Shoot, All Alone Together, and The Dark Crusader.[3]

Cable played Luke Nottingham in the short film Everything I Could, which he also directed and produced. He also acted in and directed the short film Don't Be Afraid.[3]

He has appeared in music videos including Kiefer Sutherland's “Something You Love” and Band of Horses' “In Need of Repair”.[3]

Cable's official website describes him as an actor, author, and journalist based in Las Vegas, Nevada.[4]
