Draft:BarCode Security

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BarCode is an American cybersecurity media organization founded in 2020 by cybersecurity practitioner and filmmaker Chris Glanden. It began as the BarCode podcast and later expanded into live events, documentary filmmaking, cybersecurity consulting, and other media projects. Its productions include the documentaries Inhuman (2024) and I Am Machine (2025), both directed by Glanden, and the narrative podcast FALLOUT, launched in 2026.[1]

History

[edit]

2020–2022: Podcast launch

[edit]

BarCode launched as a podcast in September 2020, hosted by Newark, Delaware-based cybersecurity practitioner Chris Glanden.[2] The show was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many in-person security conferences and networking events had been canceled. Glanden modeled the program after the informal conversations that take place at conference bars and hotel lobbies.

Early episodes included a recurring segment featuring Glanden and a fictional bartender named "Tony", who introduced a cocktail connected to the theme of the episode before the guest interview.

Within its first several months, the podcast featured guests including web security researcher Troy Hunt, cryptographer Bruce Schneier, Metasploit creator H.D. Moore, and former Tenable chief executive Ron Gula.

In 2021, BarCode won the Technology category at the People's Choice Podcast Awards.[3]

By 2022, BarCode was also producing live podcast and networking events in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.[4]

2023–present: Expansion

[edit]

In May 2023, Glanden announced Inhuman, a documentary examining the weaponization of artificial intelligence. The independently financed production marked BarCode's expansion into documentary filmmaking.[5]

Later that year, Glanden left his cybersecurity consulting role to establish BarCode Security as a consulting business alongside the media operation.[6]

BarCode also continued recording podcasts in front of live audiences. In April 2023, it recorded CISOs Riff on the Latest in Cybersecurity at SecureWorld Philadelphia, featuring cybersecurity executives Krista Arndt, David Lingenfelter, and Bistra Lutz.[7]

In 2024, Glanden co-founded the Cyber Circus Network, a collective of independent cybersecurity media creators and organizations.

The podcast recorded its 100th episode during a live event in Las Vegas in 2024. BarCode has also produced live programs in conjunction with cybersecurity events and conferences including BSides Philadelphia, SecureWorld, Hacker Halted, and events held during the annual Black Hat and DEF CON conference period in Las Vegas.

BarCode podcast

[edit]

The BarCode podcast consists primarily of long-form interviews with people working in cybersecurity and related fields, including security researchers, chief information security officers, penetration testers, social engineers, hackers, and technology executives.

The program combines technical discussions with personal interviews and elements drawn from Glanden's original conference "happy hour" concept. Many episodes have included a cocktail created around the episode's guest or subject.

Guests have included Bruce Schneier, Troy Hunt, H.D. Moore, Ron Gula, Jenny Radcliffe, Joe Grand, Graham Cluley, Sherri Davidoff, Ric Prado, Vivek Ramachandran, Anahi Santiago, John Kindervag, Jack Rhysider, Len Noe, and Higinio "W0rmer" Ochoa.

Selected episodes

[edit]
  • "SafeHouse" — Troy Hunt (October 6, 2020), founder of the data-breach notification service Have I Been Pwned?.
  • "Full Disclosure" — Bruce Schneier (December 18, 2020), cryptographer, security technologist, and author.
  • "Rumble" — H.D. Moore (January 22, 2021), founder of the Metasploit Project.
  • "Checkmate" — Graham Cluley (May 14, 2021), cybersecurity writer and commentator.
  • "Kingpin" — Joe Grand (June 4, 2021), hardware hacker and former member of L0pht Heavy Industries.

Films

[edit]

Inhuman

[edit]

Inhuman is a 2024 documentary directed by Glanden about the weaponization and potential misuse of artificial intelligence. The documentary examines subjects including deepfakes, synthetic voices, generative artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, biometric tracking, and algorithmic bias.

I Am Machine

[edit]

I Am Machine is a 2025 documentary directed by Glanden that profiles cybersecurity researcher Len Noe and examines the security, privacy, and ethical implications of human-machine augmentation.

The film was screened in several U.S. cities during 2025, including Philadelphia, Austin, Las Vegas, Houston, Grapevine, Texas, and Atlanta.

Live events

[edit]

Live events have been a recurring part of BarCode since 2022, when the organization began holding podcast recordings and cybersecurity networking events in the Delaware Valley.

The BarCode Live format places podcast interviews in bar and social-event settings rather than traditional studios.

An annual Las Vegas event, BarCode @ BarCode Vegas, began in 2023 during the summer cybersecurity conference season. The 2024 event included the recording of the podcast's 100th episode. The 2025 edition, titled SynCity Soundtrack, combined podcast interviews with live music.

Other projects

[edit]

FALLOUT

[edit]

FALLOUT is a narrative podcast launched in 2026 under the BarCode Studios name and hosted by Chris Glanden and Robert Bradley. Unlike the interview format used by BarCode, FALLOUT uses scripted narration, dramatized scenes, sound design, voice acting, and music to tell stories based on documented technology incidents.

GhostLine

[edit]

In 2026, BarCode introduced GhostLine, a browser-based video-interview tool intended to allow interview subjects to conceal their appearance and voice while speaking with a host.

GhostLine uses browser-based video and audio processing to alter a participant's appearance and voice during an interview.

Chris Glanden

[edit]

Chris Glanden is a cybersecurity practitioner, podcast host, and filmmaker who founded BarCode in 2020. Before launching BarCode full-time, Glanden worked in information technology, security operations, and cybersecurity consulting.

He directed the documentaries Inhuman and I Am Machine and is a co-founder of the Cyber Circus Network.
