Ashok Kumar Basa is an Indian civil and structural engineer from Odisha. He was President of the Institution of Engineers (India) in 2014 and served as Executive Vice President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) from 2022 to 2025, and current president of Seemanta Engineering College ,the second Indian to hold that post.[1][2] In December 2025 he became the first Indian appointed Internal Auditor of WFEO,[3] and in September 2026 he was named the first Chair of WFEO's newly created Internal Audit Committee.[4]

Early life and education

His Father known as seemanta purush as he established seemanta Mahavidyalaya, Jharpokharia seemanta Engineering College pharmacy and diploma college, Ashok Basa graduated with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the Regional Engineering College, Rourkela (now NIT Rourkela), in 1980.[5]

Career

Basa began his career as an Assistant Engineer with the Government of Odisha in 1981. He has served as Director (Technical) of B. Engineers & Builders Ltd since 1984 and as Managing Director of CEM Engineers & Consultants Pvt. Ltd since 2011.[5]

According to WFEO, his work as a structural engineer has included bridges, hydraulic structures and the rehabilitation of existing structures, including a 1,800 m flyover, a 2,000 m river bridge and a 1,400 m railway bridge.[6]

Institution of Engineers (India)

Basa was elected President of the Institution of Engineers (India) in 2014.[2][6]

World Federation of Engineering Organizations

Basa was a National Member of the WFEO Executive Council (2015–2019) and a member of the Advisory Committee to the President (2019–2021).[2] He was elected Executive Vice President in March 2022, having received the highest vote in a three-way contest.[1] He chaired the Strategic Planning Committee, which finalised the WFEO Strategic Plan for 2022–2025, and was involved in revising the WFEO Code of Ethics to address the impact of artificial intelligence.[7]

Following the General Assembly in Shanghai in October 2025, he was appointed WFEO Internal Auditor for 2025–2027, with effect from 12 December 2025.[3][6] Effective 28 September 2026, he became the first Chair of the WFEO Internal Audit Committee, with a term to the end of 2027.[4]

Standards committees

In August 2025, Basa was nominated to the National Building Code Committee (CED 46) of the Bureau of Indian Standards. He is also a member of the Bridge Standards and Specifications Committee of the Indian Roads Congress.[7]

Advocacy

Basa met President of India Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and submitted a note on water-resource governance, warning of severe water scarcity in India.[8]
