Asha Vijayaraghavan (19 July 1955 – 1 May 2026) was an Indian judge and tax advocate who served as a Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) from November 2007 to July 2017, sitting at the tribunal's Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai benches. She was among a small number of women to hold the position of Judicial Member from Tamil Nadu during that period.
Early life and education
[edit]Vijayaraghavan was born on 19 July 1955 in Chennai. Her father, K. R. Ramamani, was a senior advocate specialising in taxation law, and her mother, Hemalata Ramamani, was an educator and Sanskrit scholar. Her maternal grandfather, V. S. Sundaram, served as Accountant General of India and wrote a commentary on the Indian Income Tax Act of 1922, The Law of Income Tax in India. Her brother, K. R. Rajagopal, was a professor of applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, and surgery at Texas A&M University, and was named a Distinguished Alumnus by IIT Madras.
She completed a B.Sc. in mathematics at Stella Maris College, Chennai, and a B.L. from Madras Law College in 1984.
Legal career
[edit]Vijayaraghavan practised as a tax advocate in Chennai for more than two decades with the firm Subbaraya Aiyar, Padmanabhan & Ramamani Advocates, appearing in direct tax matters before various judicial forums, working alongside her father.
In November 2007, she was appointed a Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, a position she held until July 2017. During her tenure she sat on several benches, including the Special Bench and, on multiple occasions, the International Taxation Bench at Mumbai. A number of her orders were published in tax law journals.
Other activities
[edit]Vijayaraghavan was a committee member of the National Agro Foundation, founded by C. Subramaniam, and was involved in agricultural land management, including the cultivation of mango orchards. She served as joint secretary of the Chellamal Education Society, which operates four educational institutions in Chennai and Thiruvallur, and was a director of the drone technology company Garuda Aerospace.
She was also involved, with her family, in the administration of RMT School, a charitable rural school founded by her father that provides free education to children in villages on the Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh border.
A practitioner of Carnatic music, Vijayaraghavan founded the RMT Vaishnava Sabha, an organisation devoted to discourses on Vishishtadvaita philosophy. In the late 1980s she served as president of the Lioness Club, Madras Midtown.
Personal life
[edit]In 1975, Vijayaraghavan married R. Vijayaraghavan, an income tax advocate and grandson of S. Varadachariar, who served as Acting Chief Justice of the Federal Court of India. The couple had two children: Vikram Vijayaraghavan, a tax advocate, software entrepreneur, and barrister of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple; and Mridula Anand, a molecular biologist and Bharatanatyam dancer.
Death
[edit]Asha Vijayaraghavan died on 1 May 2026.
