Ascent Outdoors is a Seattle-based outdoor equipment retailer. The business traces its origins to the early 1990s and later operated for many years as the outdoor retailer Second Ascent. The company closed during bankruptcy proceedings in 2019 before reopening under new ownership later that year. The store relocated from Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood to Interbay in 2023.
History
[edit]The business began in the early 1990s as Second Bounce, a used sporting-goods shop specializing in outdoor gear. The store later evolved into Second Ascent.[1], expanding its inventory to include new outdoor equipment and becoming a well-known retailer among climbers, skiers, and mountaineers in the Seattle area.
The store operated for many years on Ballard Avenue in Seattle. In 2017 the company rebranded as Ascent Outdoors[2].
In April 2019 the business closed[3] during bankruptcy proceedings. The store was later acquired by Seattle entrepreneur and mountain guide Sandeep Nain[4] and reopened in July 2019[5] with a focus on increasing diversity in outdoor recreation.[6] Nain previously worked in the technology industry before pursuing outdoor guiding and entrepreneurship[7]
After more than two decades in Ballard, the store relocated to Seattle’s Interbay[8] neighborhood in 2023.
