ArtyA (a contraction of "Art by Yvan Arpa") is a Swiss independent luxury watch manufacturer founded in 2009 in Geneva by Yvan Arpa.[1][2] Initially known for its use of unconventional materials, the brand has increasingly focused on high-complication watchmaking, and is noted for its transparent sapphire and moissanite cases and proprietary movements, including tourbillons and minute repeaters.[2][3]
History
[edit]ArtyA was founded in 2009 by Yvan Arpa, a Swiss watch executive who had previously served as general director of Hublot, where he participated in the launch of the Big Bang, and as chief executive of Romain Jerome.[4] The brand's early identity was built on artistic, often provocative designs incorporating unusual materials such as real bullets, butterfly wings and shredded euro banknotes.[4] Watches are produced in small series, often as unique pieces, with dials individually crafted by the artist Dominique Arpa-Cirpka, and each piece is sold with a certificate outlining its origins.[4]
Over time, and with the involvement of the second generation of the family, the brand's emphasis shifted from provocative artistic pieces toward technical watchmaking characterized by transparency and more restrained designs.[3][2] It developed a repertoire of high-complication movements, including a three-gong minute repeater with regulator display and double-axis tourbillon unveiled at Baselworld 2016.[5][6] Transparent cases became a signature: ArtyA introduced cases in "nano-sapphire", a material that changes colour under different lighting conditions,[7] and later introduced watch cases machined from moissanite, a lab-grown crystal that is harder than sapphire, described as a first in watchmaking.[8][9]
ArtyA is a self-financed, independent family business, run by Arpa together with his wife Dominique and their son Stanislas, and is not part of a larger watchmaking group.[2][3] The company is headquartered in a former bank building in the Geneva village of Meinier and operates a boutique on Rue Neuve du Molard in Geneva.[2][10]
Watches
[edit]The brand's collections include Purity, Aqua, Complexity, Luminity, Art and Complications, along with the earlier "Son of..." series such as Son of a Gun, Son of Sound and Son of Sea.[11][12]
The Purity collection features movements suspended in fully transparent sapphire cases, with curved "Curvy" case designs and sapphire crowns.[13][8] Recent additions include the Purity Moissanite Curvy Tourbillon, presented in 2026 with what is described as the first watch case sculpted entirely from moissanite.[9][8] In the Aqua line, the Depth Gauge diver displays diving depth through five coloured bands that disappear progressively as the wearer descends, exploiting the way water filters out colours of light at increasing depths.[14][15]
At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, the brand presented the Complexity, featuring what it describes as a world-first double inclined tourbillon system: two tourbillons inclined so that their balance axes trace a cone, placed at 12 and 6 o'clock and linked by a differential that splits energy evenly between them.[16][17] The manually wound calibre Complexity-01 comprises 287 components with a 50-hour power reserve, and the watch is housed in a synthetic sapphire or ruby case in a limited series of nine pieces.[18]
Recognition
[edit]ArtyA's Purity Tourbillon was nominated for the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) in 2021,[13] and the Tiny Purity Tourbillon Chameleon, housed in a colour-changing nano-sapphire case, was a nominee in the GPHG's Men's Complication category in 2023.[7]
