Archax (stylized in all-caps as ARCHAX) is a mecha created by Japanese robotics firm Tsubame.
The robot is 15 ft (4.6 m) tall, and weighs 3.5 tons. The human operator sits inside, and controls the robot from an internal cockpit.[1]
Development
[edit]Archax is developed by Tokyo-based startup Tsubame, with support from Nabtesco.[2][3] Production is led by Tsubame president Ryo Yoshida, and development is led by Yoshida and Shoji Kawamori.[4] It was initially shown in the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.[5][6] While it initially costs ~¥400,000,000 (~$3,600,000), Tsubame intends to make it more easily available for use in operations such as rescues and sports.[7][8]
Design and abilities
[edit]Archax is a bulky, humanoid robot built from steel and aluminum alloy, with a cockpit on its torso, which its pilot enters and exits from a hatch, and controls the robot via controllers. The cockpit lacks windows, but has cameras from which its pilot can see their surroundings. It has five-fingered hands capable of lifting up tp 20 kg (44 lb) holding a plastic bottle without crushing it, and a movable head and waist.[7] It has emergency stop buttons on the cockpit and the legs.[9]
It can shift between its standard "robot" mode and a "vehicle" mode, where it lies on the wheels in its four legs. Robot mode stands at 4.5 m (15 ft) and can move at up to 2 km/h (1.2 mph), and vehicle mode can move at up to 10 km/h (6.2 mph), though Archax itself cannot move around rough surfaces or public roads.[7][6]
Archax is named after Archaeopteryx, and inspired by mecha fiction, such as Mobile Suit Gundam. Its developers cite that inspiration in their mixing of more functional features, such as its build and wheel positions, and mecha-like ones, such as superfluous pipes, to make it seem more robotic.[7]
