Applaydu is a free mobile application developed by Gameloft for Ferrero's Kinder brand, released in August 2020 for iOS and Android. The app targets children aged 4 to 9 and their parents, and includes games, storytelling tools, and augmented reality features. Additionally, Kinder toys can be scanned via the device camera to access additional digital content.[1][2]
History
[edit]Applaydu was launched in August 2020 as a joint project between Gameloft and Kinder.[3][4] The initial release included augmented reality integration with Kinder toys; subsequent versions added new games, themed areas, and storytelling content.[1][5][6]
Features
[edit]The app includes mini-games, story creation and exploration tools, and avatar customisation. Common Sense Media described it as an app that "looks great and encourages family interaction", while noting it is "more fun than educational".[7] Some content is accessible offline; other features require an internet connection. The app does not include advertising or in-app purchases, and includes a parental controls section allowing caregivers to monitor usage and manage screen time.[7][8] Applaydu holds certification from the kidSAFE Seal Program.[8]
Educational approach
[edit]Applaydu has been described as an edutainment application.[9] The app has been part of the Learning in Families through Technology (LiFT) research project at the Department of Education, University of Oxford, which studies the use of digital technologies by children and families, with a focus on language development, creativity, and parent–child interaction.[10]
Distribution
[edit]Applaydu is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and is supported in 19 languages.[11][12] The app has also received the Parents' Picks Award.[12]
