Draft:Anthony James Coffey

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthony James Coffey (born July 10, 1967) is an American painter and illustrator based in New York City. He is known for the illustrations in the four-volume "Unofficial" Beanie Baby Coloring Book series (1996–1998) and for later exhibitions of his paintings at cooperative and community galleries in New York City and North Carolina.

Early life and education

[edit]

Coffey was born in Boone, North Carolina.[1] He received a Bachelor of Science from Appalachian State University in Boone in 1990, completed an Art Foundation Program at the Cardiff School of Art in Cardiff, Wales, in 1988, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Boston in 1993.[2]

Career

[edit]

Coffey illustrated the four-book "Unofficial" Beanie Baby Coloring Book series, published by West Highland Publishing Company between 1996 and 1998 with text by Jonathan Gullery.[3]

Several of his paintings are held in the Artine and Teddy Artinian Self-Portrait Collection at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (formerly the Appalachian Cultural Museum) at Appalachian State University, donated by collector Artine Artinian in 1990.[4]

Coffey has shown his work in group exhibitions in New York, including "The Darkside" at CBGB's 313 Gallery in 2000[5] and "Subtle Arrangements," curated by Basak Malone, in 2010. He has exhibited paintings on an ongoing basis at the Ward-Nasse Gallery, a cooperative gallery in SoHo, Manhattan, including a solo show titled "Head Candies" in 2013.[6]

His 2000 painting Money Lisa, a reworking of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa commenting on the relationship between art and commerce, is documented on the website of PoCo, a pop and contemporary art museum in Tallinn, Estonia, founded in 2023.[7]

Coffey has continued to exhibit in North Carolina in recent years. In May 2025, his work was shown alongside the artist collective Out of the Blue at the Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.[8][9] In July 2026, he received the Division III first-place award for the piece "Money Shot" and an honorable mention in Division I for "The Pensive Goldfish" at the Wilkes Art Gallery's 47th annual Northwest Artists' Exhibition, a regional open-submission show juried that year by Thomas Thielemann.[10][11]

He is an associate member of the National Watercolor Society.[12] He maintains artist profiles on the online art marketplaces Artsy and Artnet.[13][14]
