Anja Popp is a British journalist and reporter for Channel 4 News. Her work has focused on current affairs and human interest stories, for which she has received several industry awards.
Early life and education
[edit]Popp earned a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative literature from Queen Mary University of London[1] before going on to attain a Master of Arts in Broadcast journalism from City, University of London in 2013.[2]
Career
[edit]Popp began her career at Channel 4 News in 2014, starting as an intern in Washington, D.C. She later held positions as a guest booker and producer in the UK before becoming a reporter in 2018.[3][4] She has worked on current affairs documentaries for programmes such as Dispatches, On Assignment, and Exposure, including a six-week assignment as an undercover reporter.[4]
Popp presented The Truth About Traveller Crime, an episode of Dispatches that examined alleged crimes committed by Gypsy, Roma and Travellers (GRTs) in Lutterworth and nationally. The programme generated hundreds of complaints to Ofcom for allegedly being discriminatory and racist and resulting in increased hate speech aimed at GRT people. Ofcom investigated the programme and determined it didn't "misrepresent factual matters" or breach its broadcasting standards.[5][6][7]
Her work has included reports on homelessness,[8] the experiences of trans teenagers,[9] and justice issues.[10] She also produced Her Name Was Lindy, a 10-minute film about Lindy Louise Pring, a homeless woman whose death in Cardiff prompted a significant social media response and was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize.[11][12]

Two years on I'm still here reporting and have done loads of really interesting stories in that time, both here and abroad and I was also the reporter for a Dispatches investigation last year. 'I'd say the main thing the award did for me was to give me confidence – it's always scary putting yourself out there to do something different but winning the award made me believe in myself and quash the doubting voice in my head!'
