Andrew Kerry Pike CBE is a British former diplomat and government communications official. He served as Director of the GREAT Britain and Northern Ireland Campaign, the UK Government's international marketing programme, from October 2021 until 2023.[1] He was earlier the first Director of Communications and Engagement at GCHQ, the UK signals intelligence agency.[2]
Career
[edit]Diplomatic service
[edit]Pike joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and served in diplomatic postings including Ireland, Poland, Brazil and Yemen.[3] From 2004 to 2009, he was based at the British Consulate General in New York as HM Consul with responsibility for Northern Ireland, where he led on Northern Ireland peace process messaging in North America.[2][3] He also held a communications role at the BBC before his government communications career.[3]
Government communications
[edit]Pike was the first Director of Communications and Engagement at GCHQ, serving from 2015 to 2017, where he led a programme of increased public engagement by the agency.[2][3]
He subsequently served as Director of National Security Communications at 10 Downing Street and the Cabinet Office,[2] where he led the cross government communications response to the 2018 Salisbury poisonings.[3]
He was then Director of Communications and Engagement at the Northern Ireland Office.[1][3]
From October 2021 to 2023 he was Director of the GREAT Britain and Northern Ireland Campaign, the UK Government's programme promoting the United Kingdom internationally for trade, investment, study and tourism. The Cabinet Office began recruiting his successor in August 2023.[1]
Later career
[edit]After leaving government service in 2023, Pike founded a communications consultancy, Andrew Pike Advisory Ltd.[4] He is chair of trustees of the charity Take a Moment, a trustee of the British Forces Foundation, and an adviser to Made by Dyslexia and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.[3][5]
Honours
[edit]Pike was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.[3] He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2024 New Year Honours for public service.[6]
